Joey Lawrence Splits Head Open in Freak Accident

Joey Lawrence is on the mend after a scary household accident left him with a painful head injury. The “Blossom” alum, 49, appeared with visible cuts and bruises on his face during the Friday, November 7 episode of his “Brotherly Love Podcast,” where the former “Dancing With The Stars” contestant opened up about what happened.

“So, here’s the story. I was with my youngest daughter, Dilly, and I was pushing her. She loves to be pushed like on a roller coaster,” Joey told his brothers and cohosts, Andy and Matthew Lawrence. “She jumped into these Amazon boxes, and she’s like, ‘Box ride!’ So I push her through the hallways, through the house. And I’ve done this, by the way, a hundred times with her.”

The actor said what started as a fun game quickly turned frightening after one wrong move led to a serious fall.

A Fun Game Takes a Dangerous Turn

The actor explained that their playful game took an unexpected turn when the box suddenly came to a stop on a marble floor threshold.

“Downstairs, we can go all the way from the front door to the back door, and there’s this one threshold between the dining room and the kitchen area where it goes from hardwood into the marble floor. I’d been over it in the boxes a hundred times,” he said.

“I was like, ‘All right, this is the last one.’ So I was low and I was pushing her. We weren’t going dangerously fast, but we had a good speed because she loved it,” Joey recalled. “For some reason, we hit this little threshold, and the box completely stopped. This little box did not move. In that matter of seconds, she was gonna fly out.”

Acting on instinct, Joey lunged forward to catch his daughter before she could fall.

‘Praise God, I Caught Her’

“I lunge to get her, and praise God, I caught her with both of my hands, and I got her back in the box,” he said. “And my momentum when I got her back in the box, I had to jump to get her. I basically flung myself over and realized when my hands are back here and she was in the box, that nothing was between me and the floor.”

The actor said he immediately realized he was hurt. “All I could see, literally, not to be too graphic, is a wall of red. I couldn’t see anything, but I knew something really bad [had happened],” he explained. “My head, no joke, was split about three and a half inches. They called it, like, a skin splinter.”

Joey Receives Stitches & Thanks Doctors

Joey said the hospital staff treated him with a mix of glue and stitches because of the extent of the injury. “The skin was so delicate and so wide that they weren’t able to pull it,” he shared. “So they had to flap it, pull it over and glue, and I had four stitches on each side.”

Despite the painful recovery, the actor said he feels grateful that his daughter was unharmed. “Praise God, I caught her,” he repeated on the podcast.

Joey shares Dilly, 2, with his wife, Samantha Cope. The couple married in May 2022, briefly filed for divorce in August 2024, and later reconciled.

Joey is also the father of daughters Charleston, 19, and Liberty, 15, with ex-wife Chandie Yawn-Nelson.

The star told listeners that while his injuries are healing, he’s just thankful the accident ended the way it did, with his daughter safe in his arms.

  1. When I was in elementary school, I think the 3rd grade. A classmate of mine and a group of neighborhood kids were playing kickball. I caught the ball and the classmate didn’t like that and picked me up and threw me head first into the concrete and split the back of my head right open. Had to use staples to close my head. I don’t remember much or any pain, I think I was in shock.

I’m 41 now, only minor memory issues lol, or is that age related. Anyway, heal up Lawrence!
