Melissa Gilbert was left completely stunned after uncovering a surprising family connection tied to “Little House on the Prairie” she never saw coming. The actor shared her revelation on Instagram, posting a social media message that connected her to a surprising moment from her past.
The discovery prompted a deeper look into the romance between iconic “Little House” characters Almanzo Wilder and Laura Ingalls Wilder. Their decades-long love story was marked by resilience, hardship, and an unbreakable bond that defined their lives together.
Melissa Gilbert Stunning Family Connection to Iconic ‘Little House’ Character
Melissa Gilbert starred in “Little House on the Prairie” from 1974 through 1983. She played the title role of Laura Ingalls Wilder throughout the NBC series’ run.
In Season 6, Gilbert’s Laura fell in love with Almanzo Wilder. They wed in a two-part Season 7 premiere episode titled “Laura Ingalls Wilder.”
In a new Instagram post, the former DWTS contestant shared that she recently learned her biological father’s middle name. Ironically, it was “Manly,” the nickname she used, as Laura, for her husband on the beloved television series.
The couple’s life was depicted in the “Little House on the Prairie” book series and television series, which told the story of the real-life childhood and frontier experiences of author Ingalls Wilder. The series followed her family’s travels across the American Midwest.
Ingalls Wilder married “Manly” when she was 18, and he was 26. Their early years together set the foundation for a partnership that would be tested by hardship but endure for decades.
Their first kiss was famously documented on the series. The character of Laura was just 16 when the momentous event occurred.
Dean Butler, who played Almanzo, told PEOPLE Magazine that the moment was “important.”
“It was an important moment for the show and a big moment in her life as a young actress,” Butler said. “This had to be a very pure, equal kiss. You watch the kiss, and it’s a very chaste, sweet, simple little kiss.”
Laura Ingalls Wilder and Almanzo Wilder’s Romance
Laura Ingalls Wilder and Almanzo Wilder married on August 25, 1885. They remained united until his passing at the age of 90 in October 1949. Laura passed away in February 1957, also at age 90.
Together, they raised one daughter, Rose Wilder Lane, who edited and shaped the direction of all the “Little House” books after her mother’s death. The couple mourned the loss of their only son, born in 1889, who died at 12 days old.
In contrast, the Wilders had a trio of adopted children on the television series: Albert, James, and Cassandra. These adoptions were fictional for the series and did not actually occur.
The book’s official website shares further details of the couple’s relationship, including where the iconic nickname “Manly” originated. In the book “These Happy Golden Years,” Ingalls Wilder shared the story of how Almanzo’s name turned into a beloved and iconic moniker.
Reportedly many of Almanzo’s friends and family members referred to him as “Manny.” However, Laura misunderstood and began calling him “Manly.” The website reported that she found Manny to be “silly” and preferred her version. In turn, Almanzo called Ingalls Wilder “Bess.” But in the series, he referred to her as “Beth.”
Original episodes of “Little House on the Prairie” stream on Peacock. A reboot series debuts July 9, 2026 on Netflix.
