Creator of Beloved ‘Air Bud’ Movies Passes Away at 63 After Time in Hospice: Our Hearts Go Out

Kevin DiCicco, the creator behind the beloved Disney franchise “Air Bud”, has died at 63 after a period in hospice care. TMZ was the first to report DiCicco’s tragic death. His brother Mark confirmed to TMZ that DiCicco passed away on Saturday in San Diego, California.

The report states he had been battling advanced chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, a condition that had steadily affected his health in recent years.

According to the Mayo Clinic, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) is a long-term lung condition caused by damage to the lungs, leading to airway inflammation that restricts airflow in and out of the lungs.

From ‘Air Bud’ Success to Personal Struggles

DiCicco’s story was one of both remarkable success and personal hardship.

He was the creative force behind “Air Bud,” the 1997 film about a basketball-playing golden retriever that went on to inspire a generation of young viewers.

The franchise grew into a global hit, with multiple spinoffs collectively earning more than $200 million, as reported by NBC.

The idea began with DiCicco’s own dog, Buddy, whose natural love for playing with a ball became the foundation for the now-iconic story.

“My obsession with sport, and his obsession with ball playing, the combination of the two, created this tremendous canine athlete,” DiCicco told NBC in 2024.

Health Issues and Homelessness Marked Final Years

Despite the success of “Air Bud,” DiCicco faced significant challenges later in life.

He revealed in 2024 that he had been experiencing homelessness while dealing with serious health issues. After losing his job as a property manager during the pandemic, he found himself in a difficult financial situation.

“With pretty much nothing in your pocket and in a dire situation is exactly what happened. I think the worst part of it … is the severe clinical depression that goes along with it,” DiCicco told NBC News in 2024.

He also spoke openly about his declining health, including respiratory issues that required the use of an oxygen tank.

“Even a five- to 10-minute shower, that’s always comforting in the morning. But after two or three minutes, you start getting short of breath,” he explained.

Legacy of ‘Air Bud’ Lives On

While his later years were marked by turbulence and hardship, DiCicco’s influence on popular culture remains lasting.

His work helped shape childhoods around the world, with “Air Bud” becoming a symbol of imagination, joy, and possibility. The story of a basketball-playing dog resonated with audiences long before viral moments became part of everyday life.

“I know especially down in [Pacific Beach], you know you see kids that were glued to the set, watched that film a hundred times, are now twenty-somethings,” DiCicco said, as reported by Fox5. “It was always nice to run into them and see how much they enjoy it.”

Even during uncertain times, DiCicco continued to look ahead, sharing ideas for future projects while expressing gratitude for the support he received.

“It means a lot that some of our fans are coming back to support us,” he said.

DiCicco leaves behind a legacy that lives on in the generations he inspired, proving how one simple idea can create lasting joy.
