Reality TV legend Melanie Jane Brisbane-Schilling, known to audiences as Mel Schilling from “Married at First Sight,” has died after a battle with cancer. Her husband shared the news in an emotional statement, revealing that she passed away peacefully, surrounded by loved ones.

Earlier this year, she announced she would step away from the Australian version to focus on her health and spend more time with her family.
Husband Shares Emotional Tribute to ‘Incredible Mum’
In a heartfelt message, Schilling’s husband reflected on the life they built together and the strength she showed through her illness. He described her as a devoted mother and partner, someone who always put her family first, even in her final moments.
“Melanie Jane Brisbane-Schilling passed away peacefully today, surrounded by love.”
He shared that, despite the toll of her illness, she remained focused on those closest to her.
“In her final moments, when I thought cancer had taken away her ability to speak, she ushered me closer and whispered a message for Maddie and me that will sustain me for the rest of my life.”
He added that her strength and selflessness defined who she was.
“This is a woman who became a new mum and a TV star at 42 — and nailed both.”
Courage Through Illness and Career in the Spotlight
Schilling became a familiar face to viewers through her role on “Married at First Sight,” where she was widely regarded as a guiding presence.
Her husband noted that she continued working even during the most difficult periods of her illness.
“This is a woman who, through two years of chemotherapy, when she could barely lift her head from the pillow, never complained and never stopped showing courage, grace, compassion, and empathy, and never missed a day of filming.”
To fans, she was a trusted voice on the show, but at home, she was something more personal.
“To most of you, she was Mel Schilling — matriarch of MAFS and queen of reality TV. To Maddie and me, she was our wee Melsie: an incredible mum, role model, and soulmate.”
Remembering Her Legacy and Final Message
Her husband also took time to thank those who supported them throughout her illness, including colleagues, friends, and members of the television industry.
He acknowledged the support of their extended professional family and close friends, expressing gratitude for the kindness shown during a difficult time.
Reflecting on her life, he shared a message she would have wanted others to carry forward.
“Life can be beautiful, and life can be incredibly cruel. But ultimately, life is fleeting, fragile, and tomorrow is promised to no one. If you can do anything to honour Mel, please live life to the full, love your people well, and try not to sweat the small stuff.”
He ended his tribute with a deeply personal farewell.
“I had 15 wonderful years with my soulmate, and it was the privilege of my life to be by her side. For that, I will be forever thankful.”
“Goodbye, my love. My one. Until we meet again.”
Just weeks before her death, Schilling had revealed that her cancer had progressed and could no longer be treated. Reflecting on her diagnosis in a March 12 Instagram post, she shared how her journey began.
“In December 2023 I was diagnosed with colon cancer after a tumour the size of a lemon was discovered during a scan. ‘Terry,’ as I called him, was successfully removed and I was initially given the all clear — that much many of you already know,” she wrote.
