Hollywood Icon Joan Collins showed up to Cannes looking like an absolute stunner. Collins was one of the most photographed stars of the night, and for good reason. At 92, she carried herself with the kind of quiet confidence that only comes from six decades at the very top of the industry.

‘Joan Is Alexis’: How ‘Dynasty’ Haunted Joan Collins for Years

Collins is not just attending Cannes. She is working.

The actress is set to star in the upcoming biopic “My Duchess”, portraying Wallis Simpson, the American socialite for whom King Edward VIII gave up the British throne in 1936.

The role brings Collins full circle in ways that feel deeply personal.

Speaking to British Vogue, she opened up about how her most iconic role, the scheming Alexis Carrington on Dynasty, followed her far longer than she ever expected.

“If I’d ever met Wallis, I could have commiserated with her about how the press treated me while I was playing Alexis,” Collins told the magazine.

She recalled the moment Dynasty producer Aaron Spelling publicly declared that Collins and Alexis were one and the same.

“I mean, when Aaron Spelling said ‘Joan is Alexis’, that haunted me for so long,” she said. “I said ‘Aaron, why did you say that? You know that’s not true’, and he said, ‘Honey, it gets headlines.'”

The frustration ran deeper than one comment. “(In the 90s), I did (a BBC adaptation) of Noel Coward’s “Tonight at 8.30″, where I played eight different roles, ranging from the elderly hag to the socialite to the abused housewife, but it doesn’t matter what you do. They have this image of you,” Collins said.

“My Duchess” follows the final years of Wallis Simpson’s life after she and Edward VIII, known as the Duke and Duchess of Windsor, were forced to live out their days in exile in France following his abdication. Edward died in May 1972. Wallis died in Paris in 1986 at 89.

The film is directed by Mike Newell, the BAFTA-winning filmmaker behind “Four Weddings and a Funeral”, and written by screenwriter and novelist Louise Fennell. “Conclave” actress Isabella Rossellini also stars as French lawyer and confidante Suzanne Blum.

For Collins, the project represents another chapter in a career that shows absolutely no signs of slowing down.
