Remembering Melanie Ward
Ward was an accomplished individual, but she is often celebrated for helping launch Kate Moss’s career and for facilitating the rise of the grunge movement. She worked with talented designers and photographers and was the senior fashion editor at the American edition of Harper’s Bazaar. It was a job she had for 14 years, WWD reports.

Ward reflected on her career and her memories with Moss in an essay for Dazed in 2010. “Kate Moss and I would spend freezing afternoons on English beaches,” she wrote. “The whole grunge thing was the polar opposite of what was going on in fashion. At that time, it was all about supermodels, maximalism, even the way the film was processed – but our collaborations were very grainy, raw, and black and white. We would go on appointments with our portfolio and people didn’t know what to make of what we were doing. They said, ‘This isn’t fashion, this is documentary.’ No advertisers would touch us.”
Despite the initial challenges, both Ward and Moss ultimately succeeded, becoming icons of the fashion industry.
