Former Miss Universe Puerto Rico contestant Jaylene Álvarez revealed she has been diagnosed with breast cancer at age 33, sharing the news publicly as she urged women to prioritize early detection and self-advocacy when it comes to their health.
Álvarez, who competed in the 2021 Miss Universe Puerto Rico pageant and placed as second runner-up, announced her diagnosis in an Instagram post on Jan. 21. In the post, she described the moment as life-altering but said she refused to let the diagnosis define her future.
“I was given a diagnosis, not a destiny,” Álvarez wrote, adding that the experience forced her to slow down and reevaluate her priorities.
The former beauty queen said she initially discovered a lump in her breast through self-examination, a step she emphasized as critical in identifying the cancer early. Doctors later confirmed the diagnosis, and tests showed the cancer had not spread, according to interviews she shared with media outlets.
Álvarez said she is currently undergoing chemotherapy and has begun adjusting to the physical and emotional challenges that come with treatment.
Using Her Platform to Raise Awareness
In interviews and social media posts, Álvarez has spoken openly about how difficult it was to process the news, especially at a relatively young age. She said cancer has affected members of her family in the past, which made the diagnosis both frightening and familiar.
Despite the challenges, Álvarez said she felt compelled to speak publicly in hopes of encouraging other women to listen to their bodies and seek medical attention when something feels wrong.
Álvarez also reflected on the emotional weight of the diagnosis, writing that the experience reshaped her sense of purpose and strengthened her faith. She encouraged her audience not to wait for a crisis to appreciate life, relationships, and personal growth.
Since sharing her story, Álvarez has received an outpouring of support from fans, fellow pageant contestants, and members of the Puerto Rican community. She thanked supporters for their messages, prayers, and encouragement, saying the response reminded her that she is not alone in the fight.
Finding Strength Through Vulnerability
In a follow-up Instagram video, Álvarez appeared wearing pink boxing gloves and a headband labeled “Cancer warrior,” a visual symbol of resilience and determination. She smiled and posed confidently, signaling her commitment to face treatment head-on.
Álvarez said she plans to continue documenting parts of her journey, not for sympathy but to normalize conversations around breast cancer, especially among younger women who may not believe they are at risk.
Health experts have long stressed that breast cancer can affect women of all ages, and Álvarez’s story highlights the importance of awareness beyond traditional screening timelines.
As she continues treatment, Álvarez said she hopes her experience encourages others to advocate for their health and approach life with greater intention.
