Let the New Show Begin

We have 16 chefs competing this season, as we have some big, award-winning chefs here. The chefs arrive in the arena, and they like the look of this area. Philip and Matt are Bocuse D’Or medalists, so the other chefs are intimidated. We definitely have some big egos here.

Buddha shows up, so they know he has competition experience. He has won “Top Chef” twice. A lot of them all know each other.

The chefs are in place, and now Padma has arrived! This is the biggest competition out there, as the winner will get $1 million, the biggest prize for a culinary competition.

For this competition, they will have to master the commandments they have set in place. They will have to master those commandments better than everyone else. Then Padma shocks them all, letting them know that four of them will be eliminated today before they even get to those commandments, so the pressure is on!

First Cook

For this first cook, the chefs will have to cook the dish that shows who they are as a chef. This will be a head-to-head competition, with the winning chef being safe. The losing chef will be at risk of going home. The names are randomly showing up on a board. If their name is showing, they will get to chose who they compete against. The head-to-head matchups are:

  • Malyna vs. Diana
  • Beverly vs. Cara
  • Michael vs. Rochelle
  • Chris vs. Katie
  • Russell vs. Kim
  • Sol vs. Keith
  • Emily vs. Philip
  • Matt vs. Buddha

The judges, including Padma, will be Michael Cimarusti and Wylie Dufresne. They will have 75 minutes to cook their best dish. They will also be cooking on a stagger, as the judges want to taste the dish as it was intended. The chefs will be judged on four criteria: Taste, Creativity, Presentation, and Technique. Each category is worth five points, so a total of 20 points is available from each judge. The top score can be 60.

The Cooking Begins

The chefs have started on this challenge. The pressure is on. Cara had a baby and is now pregnant again, so she hasn’t been in the kitchen for a while. Rochelle was scheduled to get married today, but she put off her wedding for this, so she can’t lose, right?

All of the chefs have started on this challenge now, as the time is running out for Malyna and Diana. Malyna struggled with timing, as she didn’t get everything on the dish.

Tasting on ‘America’s Culinary Cup’

Time for the judges to taste these dishes:

  • Malyna vs. Diana – The judges said the steak is good and has good flavors. They like the mashed potatoes. Padam said there are parts that feel gelatinous. For Diana, they loved the flavors of the dish. Their throat was burning, but in a good way.
  • Beverly vs. Cara – For Beverly, they like the batter. All of the ingredients are coarse. For Cara, she developed a lot of flavor in the broth. Wanted more acid.
  • Michael vs. Rochelle – For Michael, the rice was tight. The mole was great. For Rochelle, they like the presentation. The dish was underseasoned.
  • Chris vs. Katie – Chris didn’t finish his plate. It would have been a spectacular veggie dish. For Katie, she stepped aside and let the ingredients do the work.
  • Russell vs. – Russell forgot the potato. They said the dish confuses them. For Kim, they said her dish is really creative. The nicest presentation they’ve seen so far, but quail is dry.
  • Keith vs. Sol – For Keith, they said the corn puree was great. This is a delicious plate of food. For Sol, they said it was a beautiful dish. The cabbage was undercooked.
  • Philip vs. Emily – For Philip, they said a stunning dish. Beautiful, excellent, and well-executed. For Emily, they said the duck was delicious. Padma said she liked it and well done.
  • Matt vs. Buddha – For Matt, Padma said she loved the potatoey pillows. They said delicious and elegant. For Buddha, he undersold the dish when he called it a salad. It’s super playful and fun.

Scoring

All of the dishes have been tasted by the judges. Here are the scores:

  • Malyna vs. Diana – 26 to 40, so Diana wins this one
  • Beverly vs. Cara – 38 to 44, so Cara wins this one
  • Michael vs. Rochelle – 38 to 36, so Michael wins this one
  • Chris vs. Katie – 27 to 51, so Katie killed it on this one
  • Russell vs. Kim – 25 to 43, so Kim wins this one
  • Sol vs. Keith – 29 to 50, so Keith wins this one
  • Emily vs. Philip – 49 to 47, so Emily wins this one
  • Matt vs. Buddha – 51 to 52, so Buddha wins this one.

Both of the Bocuse D’Or medalists lost in this round and will be cooking again.

Second Cook on ‘America’s Culinary Cup’

The eight losing chefs will have to cook again in another head-to-head battle. The winning chefs from the first round got to pick the matchups for this round and what dish they’ll cook, with the losing chef being eliminated.

For this round, they will have to make their best version of a classic dish: fried chicken, clam chowder, shrimp & grits, or stroganoff. The winning chefs struggled, but the matchups are:

  • Fried Chicken: Malyna vs. Rochelle
  • Clam Chowder: Russell vs. Chris
  • Beef Stroganoff: Matt vs. Philip
  • Shrimp & Grits: Beverly vs. Sol

They have 60 minutes to make their dish, and the first pairing has started. The chefs get started on the dishes. The pressure is on, as four of them will be eliminated.

Tasting the Dishes

Time is up for these dishes, so here is what the judges thought:

  • Fried Chicken: For Malyna, the fried chicken is excellent. They liked the buttermilk foam. The saffron is strong and distracting. For Rochelle, the chicken is cooked beautifully. They wanted more of the sauce. Malyna wins, so Rochelle was sent home.
  • Clam Chowder: For Russell, Padma said she loves it. She wouldn’t have known it was clam chowder, though. They said a lot is going on. For Chris, they said a lot of spice. A lot of stuff is going on, but it works. Chris wins, so Russell has been eliminated tonight.
  • Shrimp & Grits – For Sol, they loved his thought process. It is underseasoned, and they need more salt. It seized up some, so not good for grits. For Beverly, her grits were so creamy. They loved the sauce, but the shrimp is under. Beverly wins this one, which means Sol has been eliminated.
  • Beef Stroganoff: For Matt, they loved his mushroom sauce. It’s simple in presentation, but a lot of complexity to it. For Philip, they said it’s intense. It looked beautiful. The beef was delicious and tender. The judges loved them both. Michael and Wylie each picked Matt and Philip, so it comes down to Padma! Matt wins this one, which means that Philip has been eliminated.
