Cakes, bakes, and a new shake-up are headed to the tent with Nigella Lawson’s arrival on “The Great British Bake Off.”
The 66-year-old food writer and television star has been confirmed as the newest judge on the hit series, marking a brand new and exciting era for the show. Channel 4 confirmed that Lawson will join fellow judge Paul Hollywood, stepping into the role left by the legendary Prue Leith, who announced her exit last week.
‘A National Treasure’: Lawson Reacts to New Role
Lawson arrives with decades of television experience, having led multiple BBC cooking shows and previously served as a judge on “The Taste” for Channel 4, making her a natural and much-anticipated addition to the Bake Off tent.
Following the announcement, Lawson shared her reaction to stepping into the Bake Off tent and joining the iconic series.
As per the BBC, the statement reads:
Getty“I’m uncharacteristically rather lost for words right now! Of course, it’s daunting to be following in the footsteps of Prue Leith and Mary Berry before her, great dames both, but I’m also bubbling with excitement. The Great British Bake Off is more than a television programme, it’s a National Treasure – and it’s a huge honour to be entrusted with it. I’m just thrilled to be joining the team and all the new bakers to come, I wish the marvellous Prue all the best, and am giddily grateful for the opportunity!”
Long admired for her warmth, wit, and playful on-screen presence, Lawson is expected to bring a distinctive and much-loved energy to the judging panel.
Prue Leith & Channel 4 Share Their Support
Leith publicly voiced her support for Lawson’s appointment shortly after confirming her own exit from the iconic series, offering a warm endorsement of her successor.
“I’m thrilled that Nigella is to experience brilliant Bake Off. She’s sassy, fun, and she knows her onions — and her croissants, cake, and crumble.”
Executives at Channel 4 also welcomed the announcement, with Ian Katz, the broadcaster’s Chief Content Officer, praising the pairing as a perfect fit for the show’s future.
“We’re incredibly excited about the marriage of two great British icons: Bake Off and Nigella. With Nigella joining the tent, Love Productions have created the dream team of British telly. Nigella brings an incomparable combination of warmth, expertise, and sophistication to the tent, and this summer’s series will be as mouthwatering a prospect as her chocolate Guinness cake.”
Leith formally confirmed her exit on January 21, explaining that after nearly a decade on the show, she felt it was the right moment to step back and embrace a slower pace.
What to Expect From the New Season
Leith joined “The Great British Bake Off” in 2017 after the series moved from the BBC to Channel 4, stepping into the role previously held by Mary Berry. During her nine-series run, she judged more than 400 challenges.
The show is set to return for its 17th season later this year, with Lawson and Hollywood joined by hosts Alison Hammond and Noel Fielding.
As per the statement published by Channel 4, Ralph Lee, CEO of Love Productions, said the team was thrilled to welcome Lawson to the Bake Off tent.
“We are all so delighted at Love Productions to welcome Nigella to The Great British Bake Off. Nigella is one of the most influential and beloved voices in food, with a tremendous passion for baking and a deep connection with all audiences. Her warmth, wit and expertise make her a perfect fit for the tent and we feel very fortunate to have her join the Bake Off team.”
Filming is expected to take place in the tent this summer, with the new season set to air later this year. The upcoming series is expected to bring a fresh dynamic to the tent as Lawson steps into the role for the first time.
