The Family Eric Dane Leaves Behind

Grey’s Anatomy” star Eric Dane died on February 19, just 10 months after publicly sharing his ALS diagnosis. He was 53. While fans remember him for his magnetic screen presence and unforgettable performances, those closest to him knew him best. People was the first to report Dane’s passing.

Dane was, above all, a devoted father to his two daughters. He often said that becoming a dad reshaped his life and gave him a sense of purpose he had never known before.

“I never had a family, and now I do,” Eric told People of his lovely daughters. “I know I’m a very lucky guy.” Those words feel even heavier now in the wake of his passing, resonating with quiet heartbreak. These words expressed his deepest sense of belonging in fatherhood and his gratitude for the family he cherished, until his last breath. Family truly became the heart of his life.

After Eric’s passing, his loved ones shared with People that he spent his “final days surrounded by dear friends, his devoted wife, and his two beautiful daughters, Billie and Georgia, who were the center of his world.” Here’s everything to know about the loving family he leaves behind.

Billie Beatrice Dane: A Firstborn Named for Family

Eric and Gayheart shared their pregnancy news in September 2009, opening a new chapter in their lives. As they prepared to welcome their first child, Eric spoke openly about how much the moment meant to him.

“I’ll be in the room,” he told Ellen DeGeneres on her show. “I’m going to stay close to my wife and make sure that she is all right. I’m really excited. I’m also very interested.”

He also revealed that the baby’s name would fall “straight down the middle” between unusual and traditional.

When Billie Beatrice Dane was born on March 3, 2010, the name carried special meaning. Years later, Eric explained the choice.

“[Billie’s] named after my father … Whether it was a boy or a girl, the firstborn was gonna be a Billie,” he said on Harry Connick Jr.’s talk show in 2016, as reported by Parade.

As Billie grew older, she began carving out her own path. Now a teenager, she has explored dance and modeling. In 2021, Gayheart proudly shared a moment from her daughter’s performance, writing, “Congratulations Billie on a BEAUTIFUL dance showcase today #proudmom.”

Billie has also shown up for both parents at public events. She attended the Chrysalis Butterfly Ball with her mother in 2022 and later supported her father at the premiere of “Bad Boys: Ride or Die.”

At home, the family kept up with Eric’s work. He once said his daughters had watched “every episode” of “Grey’s Anatomy.”

Speaking on “Live with Kelly and Mark” in 2024, he added, “They’ve watched everything,” noting that they will “never” stream “Euphoria.”

In June 2024, Billie marked another milestone with her middle school graduation.

Gayheart celebrated the moment on Instagram, writing, “I know you are more than ready for this next chapter. I have watched you juggle school, ballet and life with tenacity, grace and humor. You’re as beautiful inside as you are on the outside. I’m beyond proud of you Billie and love you 4ever and always.”

Georgia Geraldine Dane: The Youngest With a Big Personality

Eric and Gayheart welcomed their second daughter, Georgia Geraldine Dane, on December 28, 2011. The timing felt symbolic, arriving just days before the New Year.

As per The Hollywood Reporter, at the time, a rep shared that both mom and baby were doing well and that Billie was thrilled to step into her new role as a big sister.

As Georgia grew up, her bright spirit often stood out. During the COVID-19 lockdown, Gayheart reflected on her daughter’s resilience at home. “She is the only one in the family who is thriving and not just surviving,” she wrote in April 2020.

“She loves being home and finds joy in most everything she does. I’m so thankful for this kid 🥳💙.”

Georgia also developed a sharp sense of humor about her father’s career. In an August 2024 interview with Variety, Eric shared a moment that made him laugh.

“My 12-year-old, when she started watching it a couple of years ago, looked at me and said, ‘Dad, where did your abs go?’ She was serious. She wasn’t making a joke.”

Co-Parenting, ALS, and Showing Up for Family

Eric and Gayheart separated in 2018, and she filed for divorce later that year, as reported by People. Even so, they remained committed to raising their daughters together and focused on keeping their family steady.

In March 2025, the New York Post reported that Gayheart moved to dismiss the divorce, signaling a continued bond rooted in family.

Just one month later, Eric shared that he had been diagnosed with ALS. “I am grateful to have my loving family by my side as we navigate this next chapter,” he said at the time, in a statement to People.

As his condition progressed, Gayheart spoke candidly about helping their daughters face the reality of their father’s illness.

Appearing on the “Broad Ideas” podcast in November 2025, she described the message she tried to instill at home: “We show up for people no matter what.”

“He is our family. He is your father,” Gayheart said she told her daughters. “We show up, and we try to do it with some dignity and some grace and just get through it.”

Through success, setbacks, and his battle with ALS, Eric held tight to what mattered most. He was a father first. The love he poured into Billie and Georgia remains the legacy he treasured most.
