The news of Eric Dane’s death on February 19 has left fans heartbroken, as they mourn not only the loss of the beloved “Grey’s Anatomy” actor but also the devoted father and family man he was.
He was 53. His passing came just 10 months after he bravely revealed his diagnosis of amyotrophic lateral sclerosis, or ALS, a battle he faced with quiet strength and dignity.
Throughout Dane’s health battle, Rebecca Gayheart became the steady heart of their home, quietly holding everything together and making sure their daughters, Billie and Georgia, always felt protected, prioritized, and deeply loved.
“With heavy hearts, we share that Eric Dane passed on Thursday afternoon following a courageous battle with ALS,” the family said in a statement to People.

Here’s how, despite the ups and downs of their marriage, Gayheart kept her family together while supporting Dane through his health battle.
A Swift Romance That Defied Hollywood Norms
GettyDane and Gayheart’s bond formed quickly. On screen, Dane became known for the slow-burn romance of “McSteamy” on “Grey’s Anatomy.” Off-screen, his relationship with the “Scream 2” actress moved at full speed.
In a 2008 interview with Flaunt magazine, Dane said their love story was refreshingly simple. “It’s probably one of the least interesting stories in the world. It went basically like this: ‘You wanna go out?’ ‘Yeah, sure.’ Ten months later, we were married,” he said, as reported by People.
The pair eloped in Las Vegas on October 29, 2004.
They later welcomed their daughters, Billie in 2010 and Georgia in 2011.
Dane often spoke about being a protective dad. During a 2024 appearance on “Live with Kelly and Mark,” he shared that his daughters had seen “every episode” of “Grey’s Anatomy,” but said he would “never” allow them to watch his darker role in the HBO drama “Euphoria.”
Choosing Reconciliation Over a Finalized Divorce
GettyThe strength Gayheart showed during Dane’s final months was the result of a long journey. E! News reported that she originally filed for divorce in February 2018 after 14 years together.
At the time, Dane told People they were ending the marriage for the sake of the family but would continue to “work as a team” to raise their children.
Despite the separation, the legal process stalled for seven years. During that interval, the pair continued to travel together, including a family trip to Europe in 2022.
People reported in March 2025 that Gayheart made the pivotal decision to dismiss the divorce petition entirely.
This move came just one month before the public learned of the actor’s terminal illness, effectively reuniting the couple for his final chapter.
Standing as a Champion Through a Terminal Diagnosis

When Dane shared his ALS diagnosis in April 2025, Gayheart had already stepped into the role of steady anchor in his life. He never hesitated to say how much he depended on her during those final months.
In a June 2025 appearance on “Good Morning America,” Dane spoke candidly about their bond.
“I call Rebecca. I talk to her every day,” he said. “We have managed to become better friends and better parents. And she is probably my biggest champion, my most stalwart supporter, and I lean on her.”
Gayheart, for her part, never framed their story as something broken. In an interview with E! News in April 2025, she reflected on their marriage with clarity and pride.
“We are great co-parents. I think it’s important to not look at a relationship that ends as a failure,” she said.
“It’s just a season. It wasn’t a failure. It was a huge success. We were married for, I mean, we are still married, but together for 15 years, and we had two beautiful kids so I think that’s a successful relationship, and that’s how we look at it.”
Putting Their Daughters First in Dane’s Final Chapter
As Dane’s health became more fragile, the focus inside the home shifted. The emotional stability of Billie and Georgia came first.
In a December 2025 essay for The Cut, Gayheart reflected on how the family dynamic changed during that period. The added time together, she said, revealed a gentler side of both parents.
“Spending all this time together, it’s all been really positive, and I think it’s nice for the kids to see maybe a softer side of us,” Gayheart wrote.
“It’s not that they have the hopes of us being together — kids always dream of their parents getting back together, and I think now ours don’t because they understand the reality of the situation.”
She made clear that while their romantic relationship had transformed, the bond itself had not disappeared. “It’s a very complicated relationship, one that’s confusing for people. Our love may not be romantic, but it’s a familial love.”
Speaking on the “Broad Ideas” podcast in November 2025, Gayheart said her priority was to model strength and steadiness for her daughters.
“I am definitely trying to show [my daughters] that we show up for people no matter what. And he is our family, he is your father. We show up and we try to do it with some dignity and some grace and just get through it, and that we will get through it the best we can,” she said.
“I mean, it’s super complicated for me.”
Through it all, Gayheart made clear that whatever shape their relationship takes, showing up with love, dignity, and unity for their daughters remains what matters most.
