‘When Calls The Heart’ Season 13 Premiere: What Happened?

The season 13 premiere started sweetly with the news that Elizabeth Thornton (played by Erin Krakow) was returning to Hope Valley with her young son, Little Jack (Hyland Goodrich), her beau, Mountie Nathan Grant (Kevin McGarry), and his daughter Allie (Jaeda Lily Miller). In the season 12 finale, they’d all last been seen rushing out of town to seek urgent treatment for Little Jack’s newly diagnosed diabetes.

From the opening scenes of the premiere, it was clear that they’d all spent the whole summer at the boarding house owned by the mother of Elizabeth’s late husband Jack — Charlotte Thornton, played by Brooke Shields, who appeared on the show for the first time in a decade.

Many wonderful moments occurred during the season premiere, from the town’s excitement about opening the long-planned Goldie National Park and playhouse to the sweetly orchestrated turn of events that allowed Elizabeth, Nathan, and their kids to stay in Hope Valley for more than just the weekend.

But it was the last moments of the premiere that left fans most stunned, as the community noticed smoke in the distance — signs of a wildfire in the park — just after Allie and her friends headed inside for a hike, a development that Krakow has since called a “life or death” situation.

‘When Calls The Heart’ Fans Flooded Social Media With Reactions to Season Premiere

Fans flooded social media with reactions to the season premiere’s cliffhanger and the teaser for next week’s episode, which revealed the fire spreading quickly through the forest. “When Calls The Heart” was trending on X, formerly known as Twitter, with big reactions from fans, including one who tweeted, “Oh no! A fire!! What a way to end the first episode of the season!!!”

Someone else wrote on Facebook, “Oh no hope the children are okay, going to be long week to wait to see what happens, can’t wait”

Another fan quipped, “I know lots of #Hearties have been asking for more 🔥on the show. I don’t think this is what they meant 😅”

Many Hearties commented on how much they loved all the touchpoints in the premiere, including someone who wrote on Facebook, “What a beautiful way to begin Season 13. Episode one captured everything that makes When Calls the Heart so special, heartfelt storytelling, strong character moments, and the warm sense of community in Hope Valley. Elizabeth’s journey continues to feel authentic and well earned, and the pacing allowed the emotions to land naturally. And wow, that cliffhanger said everything and set things up perfectly for next week. I can’t wait to see what happens next.”

Another fan declared, “The show tonight was the best it has been in a few seasons! The writers have stepped it up in content and storyline, all the actors were on their game. It was exciting to watch and now I’m a anxious for next week’s episode. I absolutely loved it!”

Erin Krakow & Kevin McGarry Weighed In on the ‘Life or Death’ Cliffhanger

Right after the premiere aired, TV Insider published a new interview with Krakow and McGarry in which they addressed the wildfire and its impact on Hope Valley. McGarry said the next episode will show Nathan racing to find Allie and her friends.

“As much as, of course, his duty is to go protect the town to make sure it doesn’t get decimated by the fire,” he told the outlet, “ultimately, I think at that moment, it’s my daughter out there. That’s why Joseph hops on as well. It’s his son out there as well. So we’ve got the two fathers going to get their children and the Mounties helping out as well.”

Krakow acknowledged how scary it was for Elizabeth seeing Nathan ride off into danger, having lost her first husband in much the same way (a Mountie who died in a landslide years before). She told TV Insider that the crisis “brings up some intense feelings and fears, especially on the heels of so much joy.”

“The stakes are very high,” she said. “It’s life or death, and knowing that there are kids in those woods… She has to stay with Little Jack, obviously, and make sure that he’s OK, but she’s quick to tell Nathan that Allie’s out there, and they ride out as quickly as they can to try to save the day. But it’s dangerous, and even a windstorm back then was life or death.”

The season 13 premiere and all other past episodes of “When Calls The Heart” are available to stream on Hallmark+. The second episode, ominously called “Up in Smoke,” will air on Sunday, January 11, at 8 p.m. Eastern time.
