Iconic TV Home Granted Historic Landmark Status in Los Angeles

“The Brady Bunch” house is officially a historic landmark.

The home, which is located in California’s San Fernando Valley, was declared an official cultural monument by the Los Angeles City Council on Wednesday, March 4. The status means the house is protected from demolition.

‘Brady Bunch’ House Gets Landmark Status

While the home was never actually used to film the iconic American sitcom, the exterior was used throughout the show’s five seasons to set scene locations. All of the show’s interior scenes were filmed in a sound studio.

“Long before it became a pop‑culture pilgrimage site and backdrop for countless photo ops, the ‘Brady Bunch’ House helped shape America’s vision of family life in the late 1960s and early ’70s — especially the idea of a blended family,” Adrian Scott, president of the L.A. Conservancy, told the Los Angeles Times.

He continued, “We’re thrilled to see it now designated as a Historic-Cultural Monument, ensuring the ‘Brady Bunch’ — and their iconic home — remain part of Los Angeles’ story.”

While the designation as a cultural monument protects the home from demolition, private owners can still decide they want to tear down the property. However, the Los Angeles Cultural Heritage Commission, is granted one year to find preservation solutions.

The vote on the “Brady Bunch” house—which was first constructed in 1959 by architect Harry M. Londelius, according to the Los Angeles Times—was unanimous/

The ‘Brady Bunch’ Home Was Owned By HGTV

The split-level Studio City property is currently owned by HGTV, after they won a bidding war in 2018.

Violet and George McCallister purchased the home in 1973 for $61,000. The beloved property remained in the family until 2018, when fans of the hit series, including *NSYNC alum Lance Bass, opened their wallets.

HGTV ultimately won the war with a bid of $3.5 million.

Shortly after the acquisition, the home renovation network premiered a limited series, “A Very Brady Renovation.” HGTV favorites and “Brady Bunch” stars teamed up to renovate the iconic home.

“Property Brothers” Drew and Jonathan Scott hosted the renovation series, which featured Mina Starsiak Hawk and Karen E Laine of “Good Bones,” Leanne and Steve Ford of “Restored by the Fords,” Jasmine Roth of “Hidden Potential,” and Lara Spencer of “Flea Market Flip.”

“I literally did not even know where this place is until 1990,” Mike Lookinland, who played Bobby Brady in the hit series, told “Today.”

The network ultimately sold the home to a private owner for $3.2 million in 2023, according to the Wall Street Journal.
