Erin Napier has plenty to be thankful for with her HGTV show “Home Town,” including how it’s helped her relationship. Erin shared how working side-by-side with her husband Ben has improved their communication.
Erin Napier Explains Why ‘Home Town’ Has Been ‘Training’ for Her & Ben
During the July 18 episode of “The Heirloom” podcast, Erin shared a surprising reason she’s thankful for “Home Town.”
“I am extremely thankful for the show, for a lot of reasons, but most of all it’s probably because it has been training for Ben and I to all day, every day speak to each other and speak to each other with kindness,” she explained.
Erin continued, “And so when we get home, we still do. We never talk to each other in a way that I wouldn’t want filmed.”
“We don’t criticize each other,” she explained. “This is like a tenet of our marriage, I guess.”
She shared that Ben is “very intentional about every single decision he makes. Every decision he wants to make sure that it’s gonna make me feel good and feel loved.”
Erin noted, “I feel like that has something to do with [how] we spend every moment of our day together talking to each other on camera. And it has sharpened our tools of how to communicate with each other. I feel really lucky for that.”
Erin Napier Shares the Secret of Her Happy Marriage
Erin also touched on how open their communication has become. “That’s the secret to mine and Ben’s marriage,” she said. “The reason I think we have a happy marriage with very, very little conflict is that I don’t let myself tell stories about him.”
She continued, “I just say it. I say it right to him. ‘Are you doing this? Are you thinking that?’ And he says right back to me what he’s really doing and thinking. We’re together all day, so it’s very easy for us to do that.”
In a March 2025 interview with House Beautiful, Erin shared that they “communicate constantly,” adding, “We’re very lucky that we are able to because we’re always together.”
With busy family life and filming “Home Town,” it’s sometimes challenging to make date nights happen, but they found a workaround that works just as well.
“We love day dates,” Erin shared. “If we get a little free afternoon, we’ll go just the two of us and have lunch somewhere.”
The HGTV star added, “It’s a great time for connection when the nights are crazy when you have kids.”
