HGTV’s ‘Totally ’90s House’ Teases ‘Shocking’ Cast Change

HGTV is preparing to bring viewers a nostalgic blast from the past with its upcoming new series, and buzz is already building.

In “Totally ’90s House,” an assembly of fan-favorite ’90s TV stars will form two teams, competing to update and renovate a house that is literally stuck in the 1990s.

Hosted by “Family Matters” star Jaleel White, the erstwhile Steve Urkel will guide his fellow ’90s stars through the competition, which will hopefully result in a stunning home upgrade that brings the abode a fresh, contemporary look ideal for modern living.

A ‘Shocking’ Switcheroo

The first team of ’90s-era celebs consists of: Brian Austin Green of “Beverly Hills, 90210” fame, “7th Heaven” star Beverley Mitchell, and “Full House” alum and current Hallmark Channel favorite Jodie Sweetin.

They’ll be facing off against a competing team made up of Melissa Joan Hart from “Sabrina the Teenage Witch,” “Boy Meets World” star Matthew Lawrence and Keshia Knight Pulliam of “The Cosby Show.”

In an exclusive sneak peek at the series’ first trailer shared by Us Weekly, it appears that that one of the stars won’t be sticking around for long.

Host White tells the stars, “And something so shocking [takes place] that one team will never be the same.”

That is followed by a shot of Hart and her team, informing her teammates that she needs to “step away for a little while.”

That leads to a surprise new addition to the cast: Hart’s former “Melissa & Joey” co-star Joey Lawrence, who’ll be joining brother Matthew’s “Totally ’90s House” team.

A Totally ’90s Renovation

The show promises to deliver a healthy dose of ’90s nostalgia to HGTV viewers.

“Hosted by actor, producer and game show host Jaleel White, ‘Totally ’90s House’ follows two teams of iconic ’90s celebs as they scour the country for houses stuck in the 1990s,” reads the series’ synopsis.

“Each team will pick their favorite throwback home and give it a major overhaul,” the synopsis adds. “The team with the best renovation wins bragging rights and $25,000 for their chosen charity.”

In addition to those beloved 1990s stars, some familiar HGTV personalities will also be part of the action, serving as judges and mentors. Fans can expect to see Drew Lachey, Paige Davis, Jonathan Adler, Mina Starsiak Hawk, Vern Yip, and Brian and Mika Kleinschmidt.

’90s Nostalgia Is All the Rage

HGTV has seen extraordinary success cashing in on 1970s nostalgia with 2019’s “A Very Brady Renovation,” which racked up monster ratings by reuniting the surviving stars of “The Brady Bunch.” In the seres, they renovated the house that served as the exterior of the Brady family home so that the interior replicated the home seen on the TV sitcom, which was filmed in a studio soundstage, not the actual home.

Hopes are apparently high that a flashback to the 1990s will deliver similar ratings success.

“Everybody loves the ‘90s again,” White said in a previously issued press release.

“The fits are back, the playlists are on repeat, and kids who weren’t even born yet are binge-watching the shows we made famous. But while some things from the ‘90s are timeless … some of y’all never got the memo that the decade ended,” he added.

“We asked America to show us the homes still living in the past, and the response was incredible,” White concluded. “Now it’s time for the ultimate throwback transformation. Get ready for the biggest ’90s house battle ever.”
