Ever wanted to star on a hit HGTV series? Whether you have what it takes to have your own home renovation show or your house is in need a major upgrade, find out how you can make your dreams come true.
How To Be on HGTV
Each HGTV star has their own story of how they made it to the network. For “Property Brothers” Drew and Jonathan Scott, it began with a hosting gig on a Canadian TV show.
The twins were growing their house-flipping business when Cineflix hired Drew to host its series “My Dream House,” according to realtor.com. Jonathan was later brought on as the show’s contractor as the brothers signed on for a full season in 2011. That’s when HGTV came knocking.
For “Down Home Fab” stars Chelsea and Cole DeBoer, things happened very differently. The South Dakota couple had a large following from their time on MTV’s “Teen Mom.” Though they had left that franchise in 2020, they continued to grow their following as they documented their home build through social media.
Chelsea decided to try her luck by sliding into the HGTV Instagram profile’s DMs asking to work together, and the rest is history.
While there is no tried and true method to land one’s own HGTV series, being featured on a hit show is another story.
Oftentimes, the network will promote casting calls via social media, seeking homeowners in certain regions who meet specific criteria.
For example, to be featured on “Help! I Wrecked My House,” homeowners must be local to Salt Lake City, have a set minimum budget, and be in need of renovation in three or four areas of their home. “Down Home Fab” has similar criteria, just transported to the Sioux Falls region.
The application process moves forward from there and will often include interviews, photos of one’s home, and more.
Which Shows Are Currently Casting?
HGTV makes it simple to find out which shows are searching for homeowners on its website.
There are often multiple shows casting at the same time, and all can be found on the “Be on HGTV” tab.
In addition to fan favorites like “House Hunters,” “Property Brothers” and “Down Home Fab,” HGTV is currently seeking participants for multiple new, yet unnamed series.
“Are you purchasing or have recently purchased a large property with acreage, ranch-type facilities and more? HGTV wants to hear from you,” one listing reads.
“We’re looking for homeowners in Orange County, Calif. who are ready to renovate their homes and give them long-needed makeovers,” another states.
It’s also a good idea to follow your favorite HGTV stars and shows on social media, as they often share up-to-date information on their casting search.
