MTV Cancels Hit Show After 14 Years

After 46 seasons and 14 years, MTV has officially decided to cancel “Ridiculousness,” TMZ reports. The show featured viral internet clips along with commentary from the hosts and celebrity guests that was sure to make everyone laugh.

“The decision was relayed to the cast and crew this week, with everyone informed the current season will be the show’s last,” the outlet writes. “We’re told the shocking announcement came straight from the network’s top brass.”

Furthermore, no more original episodes will be made, but “previously produced first-run episodes will continue to air on MTV through 2026.

Variety further reports that the network is looking to create content that “embraces its experimental DNA” and represents “different creative voices” and a “refreshed programming,” which is the reason behind the decision.

This comes after the Paramount Skydance merger, which resulted in numerous layoffs at MTV’s parent company.

‘Ridiculousness’ Impact

“Ridiculousness” first premiered in 2011 and was hosted by Rob Dyrdek alongside Steelo Brim and Lauren “Lolo” Wood. MTV has since produced more than 1,700 episodes, making it the longest-running series in MTV history.

One month before news came out that the show was being canceled, Chanel West Coast spoke with TMZ and detailed why the show has so much success.

“It’s honestly the best fan base,” she said. “We have such a loyal fan base. They love to laugh. Who doesn’t love to laugh? And I think in a world with a lot of drama and negativity going on, people just want to laugh.”

Over the years, there were four spin-offs, including “Amazingness,” which showcases people’s talents; “Deliciousness,” which showcases food-themed videos; “Adorableness,” which showcases cute and adorable clips; and “Messyness,” where the name says it all.

How Much Did ‘Ridiculousness‘ Emcee Rob Dyrdek Make?

Just a day before the news that the show is being canceled, Bloomberg reported that MTV is paying host Rob Dyrdek at least $32.5 million per year, according to court documents reviewed by the publication. And if the show was renewed for 2028 and ’29, he would be set to make $45 million.

The outlet added that as part of the $32.5 million per year, he receives bonuses, including a $21,000-per-episode executive producer fee and an escalating $61,000-per-episode on-camera fee.

In a 2021 episode of Dear Media’s Trading Secrets podcast, Dyrdek revealed that it was his idea to start “Ridiculousness,” after seeing the popularity of “America’s Home Videos.”

“I was like, ‘I’m gonna make the faster, cooler version of that.’ And that’s all we did,” he said on the episode. “When we did the first pitch, we just took America’s Funniest Home Videos, took out all the fat, and then I stood in there with the pitch with an Xbox controller.”

    • I will miss it too. I love watching over and over also. Unfortunately, it comes on late at night here and I can’t watch all the time. MTV is making a huge mistake.

  2. Big, big mistake, huge (to take a line from Pretty Woman).
The only larger mistake that Mtv made this autumn was saying that all of their music channels will no longer be broadcasting. After all if video killed the radio star where does this leave us?

  3. As usual you always take off the best.
And you’re replacing it with what again?
Big mistake! I will miss watching all the craziness and the great people on the show. My family and I have been watching this show since it came on. My kids were really pumped because Rob is from our home state. Another network I’m done with.

  5. This sucks. First the music videos go away ( why call it Music tv?) And now this. I guess that I won’t need to check this station anymore.
