After three decades of sold-out tours, chart-topping hits, and memories that spanned generations, Aqua has said goodbye.
The Danish-Norwegian pop group, best known for their infectious 1997 smash “Barbie Girl,” confirmed their split on Monday in an emotional Instagram post that left fans around the world reaching for the tissues.
GettyAqua formed in Copenhagen in 1995, built around the undeniable chemistry between lead vocalist Lene Nystrøm, now 52, fellow vocalist René Dif, 58, and producer Søren Rasted, 56. Guitarist Claus Norreen, 55, co-founded the group with Rasted but quietly stepped away in 2016 to pursue other projects.
The announcement, shared alongside their iconic band logo, marked the end of one of the most beloved pop acts of the 1990s.
The Post That Broke a Million Hearts
The statement was warm, heartfelt, and unmistakably final.
“Dear everyone. After many incredible years, we have decided to close the chapter of AQUA as a live band,” the group wrote.
“AQUA has been such a huge part of our lives, and together we’ve had the chance to experience more than we ever dared to dream of.”
The band reflected on a journey that took them to every corner of the globe and into the hearts of millions.
“We’ve travelled the world countless times, met so many wonderful people, sung together with millions of you, and shared memories that we will carry with us forever,” they continued.
The post ended on a note of grace and gratitude.
“When you’ve been together for this long, you also learn when it’s time to protect what you’ve created together. For us, this feels like the right moment to say goodbye, while the memories are still strong, and while the love for the music, the story, and each other remains intact.”
GettyThey signed off simply: “Nothing but love and gratitude from here on. Endless love, Lene, René and Søren.”
From Copenhagen to the World: The Aqua Story
The band went on to sell more than 33 million singles and albums worldwide, making them the most commercially successful Danish act in history, per US Sun.
While hits like “Doctor Jones” and “Turn Back Time” cemented their status, it was “Barbie Girl” that made them legends. The song shot to number one on the UK singles chart in 1997 and became one of the defining pop moments of the decade.
Nearly 30 years later, the song found a whole new audience.
When Nicki Minaj and Ice Spice released a reworked version tied to the blockbuster “Barbie” film starring Margot Robbie, the track climbed back to number four on the UK charts, introducing Aqua to an entirely new generation.
The tributes came quickly. Fellow Danish pop icon Whigfield, who scored her own UK number one with “Saturday Night” back in 1994, was among the first to respond. Writing in her native tongue in the comments, she said: “Thank you for the music and the good times.”
