Billy Steinberg, the Grammy-winning songwriter whose lyrics powered some of pop music’s most enduring hits, has passed away at 74.
Steinberg passed away Monday at his home in Brentwood, California, after a battle with cancer. His attorney, Laurie Soriano, confirmed his passing to Billboard. Over a career that spanned decades, Steinberg helped shape the sound of modern pop, writing songs that defined the 1980s and continued to resonate with new generations of listeners.
While many fans may not have immediately recognized his name, they knew his work. Steinberg crafted a catalog of chart-topping singles that became cultural touchstones. He blended emotional honesty with unforgettable hooks, giving artists material that showcased both vocal power and vulnerability.

The duo followed that success with Cyndi Lauper’s “True Colors,” which also reached No. 1 on the Billboard Hot 100. The heartfelt ballad grew into an anthem of self-expression and acceptance, embraced by audiences worldwide.
Their songwriting partnership extended to Whitney Houston’s “So Emotional,” which topped the charts, as well as Heart’s “Alone” and The Bangles’ “Eternal Flame,” both of which became enduring radio favorites. According to Billboard, Steinberg’s body of work earned widespread industry recognition and multiple Grammy nominations over the course of his career.
