Beloved ’80s Rocker Announces Retirement at 74: ‘It’s Time’

Whitesnake founder David Coverdale shared a major career announcement on social media on Thursday, November 13: He’s retiring!

David Coverdale Retires From Music

Coverdale — who also led the band Deep Purple — shared the news with fans via Instagram.

“Ladies and gentlemen, boys and girls, brothers and sisters of the Snake, a special announcement for you. After 50 years-plus of an incredible journey with you—with Deep Purple, with Whitesnake, Jimmy Page—the last few years it has been very evident to me that it’s time really for me to hang up my rock ‘n’ roll platform shoes and my skintight jeans,” Coverdale, 74, began in a heartfelt video on Thursday, November 13.

He continued, “And as you can see, we’ve taken care of the lion’s wig. But it’s time for me to call it a day.”

Coverdale went on to thank his fans for decades of love and support.

“I love you dearly. I thank everyone who’s assisted and supported me on this incredible journey: All the musicians, the crew, the fans, the family. It’s amazing. But it really is time for me to just enjoy my retirement, and I hope you can appreciate that,” Coverdale added. “Once again, I love you with all my heart. Fare thee well.”

The retired rocker is best known for founding Whitesnake in 1978. The band gained worldwide popularity with hit songs such as “Here I Go Again,” “Is This Love,” “Still of the Night,” and “Crying in the Rain.”

He was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame as a member of Deep Purple in 2016.

Fans Share Their Support Amid David Coverdale’s Retirement News

“So proud of you, Baby!! You gave so much of yourself, so freely, and with so much love and care. Now you get to do whatever you want to!” his wife, Cindy Coverdale, commented.

“Thank you for this incredible journey full of amazing songs, records, concerts, hits and I wish you the best possible things in life!” one fan wrote.

“You’ve created a lot of fans and changed a lot of rock n roll lives with your music. I can’t say much more. I’m devastated. I just would like to thank you, profoundly,” another added.

Another follower simply wrote, “Thank you for the music.”
