Nicolas Cage Breaks His Silence on the Cancellation of ‘Spider-Noir’

Nicolas Cage remains one of the most beloved actors in Hollywood. Because of this, there was a great deal of excitement when Amazon’s Prime Video service and MGM+ announced that he would star in “Spider-Noir,” a series about an alternative version of Spider-Man. However, now that the series has been canceled, the “National Treasure” star is breaking his silence.

The main cast for “Spider-Noir” also includes Lamorne Morris, Li Jun Li, Karen Rodriguez, Abraham Popoola, Jack Huston, and Brendan Gleeson.

Deadline reported on September 4 that Prime Video had decided against proceeding with a second season of the highly rated series. This comes as the streamer seeks to greenlight a new series based on Sony’s Marvel character collection.

Now, days later, Cage has issued a statement to Deadline about the cancellation of “Spider-Noir.” He said, “For me, one season is perfect, having said what I wanted to say with this dangerous, innovative, pop-art Spider-Man.”

The actor then said, “Onwards, upwards, inwards.” Previously, while promoting the series, Cage was asked by Variety whether a second season was in the works. He responded, “I do not know. But I would say that whether it happens or not, all of us achieved what we set out to do, and it works on its own. We’ll see what happens.”

‘Spider-Noir’ Has Stellar Ratings

Prime Video released all eight episodes of the Cage-led series on May 25. Notably, all episodes can be watched in either Technicolor or black-and-white. The series was met with immediate acclaim from both critics and fans.

On Rotten Tomatoes, “Spider-Noir” has a stellar 92% positive rating from critics. As for the audience’s reaction, the show also performed well, garnering a 90% rating. The critics’ score is based on 112 reviews, whereas more than 1,000 audience members reviewed the show after watching it.

Per Deadline, the now-canceled show also delivered fairly impressive viewership. It debuted at number two on Nielsen’s top 10 original series in its first week of release. This chart placement came from 851 million minutes of the show being viewed overall.

Fans are taking to social media to react to the show’s cancellation. One person noted the binge model, saying streaming platforms should perhaps question this release strategy. They wrote, “This show should be proof that the binge model is just NOT the way to go, man. Everybody should’ve been talking about it every week over the summer, but instead it was forgotten by like mid-June.”

Someone else chimed in, revealing they’d never gotten around to watching the Cage-led show despite initially planning to do so. They said, “I had seen that it was all 8 episodes releasing at once, and I was like, I can start it whenever I want, no rush, but eventually I forgot about it because it wasn’t even being talked about after the first month, so I completely agree.”

Another person highlighted the series’ success, including its Emmy nominations. According to them, “‘SPIDER-NOIR’ getting canceled after 1 season despite 11 Emmy nominations and a 92% Rotten Tomatoes score is actually insane.”

Lastly, another person looked on the bright side, noting, “At least Spider-Noir got a season, unlike some other shows.”
