An unsung star of British radio has passed away suddenly at the age of just 45, Mirror reports.
Ian Deeley was the studio manager behind many of the flagship shows on BBC Radio 2. One of those shows is the mid-morning slot hosted by popular broadcaster and former model Vernon Kay.
It was Kay who announced Deeley’s passing on his show on Tuesday, March 24.
Kay, 51, interrupted the regular proceedings on his live programme to say, “As you can imagine at Radio 2, it’s not just the names in the Radio Times who do all the work. We do very little, we just talk when we put up the fader, I’ll be honest with you, myself and every on-air name included.”
He continued, “It’s the massive team behind Radio 2 that make this network so successful.”
Kay went on, “And the BBC family were devastated to hear that our brilliant studio manager, Ian Deeley, had died unexpectedly but peacefully at the age of 45. At his heart, Ian was a broadcaster, so whether he was driving the desk, engineering an outside broadcast, producing or presenting, Ian just loved radio with every fibre of his being.”
“Even though he was a relatively young chap, Ian had a long and illustrious career, during which he pretty much worked on every BBC radio station,” the presenter added.
News of Deeley’s passing spread fast, with various media outlets and social media accounts announcing the tragic news.
News of Ian Deely’s Passing Reached Instagram
Popular Instagram account Radio Today posted news of Ian Deeley’s passing in a post that featured a picture of the studio manager.
The caption on the post begins, “During his BBC Radio 2 show this morning, Vernon Kay announced that his colleague, Ian Deeley has died at the age of 45.”
It continues, “Ian had previously worked for the BBC in news, production and after various other positions became an Outside Broadcast Manager last year. He began at BBC Radio Gloucester in 2006 as a Broadcast Assistant.”
Numerous prominent radio personalities commented on the post to pay tribute to Deeley following the announcement of his passing.
On-Air Personalities Hail ‘Radio World’s Greatest Ever Anorak’
Above is Ian Deeley’s final Instagram post from back in December 2025, showing his playful side as Christmas approached.
Some of British radio’s most notable on-air personalities took to the comments section of the Radio Today account’s post to pay tribute to Ian Deeley.
BBC Radio 1 host Greg James wrote, “Perhaps the radio world’s greatest ever anorak. A brilliant brilliant man and one of the all time great radio people. We often had great chats about rubbish old cars and he never stopped going on about optimods. God he loved optimods. This is so so sad.”
BBC Radio 2’s Rock Show host, Shaun Keaveny, commented, “This really winded me. Ian was just such a fantastic lad. We used to have many deep and daft chats about radio especially but life in general. There’s something lovely about the radio community, a self effacement and a refusal to take stuff too seriously, and Ian was one of those guys through and through. Sending lots of love and all our thoughts to his loved ones xxxxxx.”
The Tributes Continued
Zoe Ball, a BBC Radio legend, noted, “adored broadcasting alongside Ian. such a professional, great stories & the best taste in music. an absolute pleasure to know him. my heart goes out to his loved ones. rest well our wonderful friend ❤️✨.”
Hits Radio and Greatest Hits Radio host Stephanie Hirst stated, “Absolutely gutted. I’ll miss our random WhatsApp’s with messages about his sporadic online station ‘The Flamethrower’ – and its extra phat processing – our love of making radio sound special and how much of a brilliant man he was. We’ve lost a true radio great. Sending love to Ian’s friends and loved ones. ❤️💔xx”
Nick Bright, who’s known for having hosted a variety of shows on BBC Radio 1Xtra, commented, “I’m in total shock. Ian LOVED radio, it meant everything to him. We had so many nerdy conversations about desks and processing whilst working together at 1Xtra, first at Yalding House and then later at NBH. A couple of highlights, listening to him on “The Flamethrower” during lockdown and randomly seeing his cameo on The Thick of It when they filmed at 5Live when it was back at TVC. RIP my friend 💜.”
Finally, Capital Radio’s Capital Breakfast host Chris Stark said, “A top top radio guy. RIP Ian.”
There are, of course, countless other comments from Deeley’s colleagues, other prominent individuals from the radio world, and radio fans alike.
We’d like to send our heartfelt condolences to Ian Deeley’s family at this difficult time. May he rest in eternal peace.
