Jessie J is opening up with raw honesty as she returns to the stage, sharing the grief and healing that have shaped her life over the past few years. The British singer, 37, broke down in tears during her London show on Thursday while performing her new song “Comes in Waves.”
She told the audience that the track was written about the miscarriage she suffered in 2021, and she chose to sing it on the anniversary of that loss.
Jessie J Honors Her Baby Four Years After Miscarriage With Powerful Tribute
Getty“Today marks four years since I lost my baby,” Jessie said, according to a video published by The Daily Mail. “I don’t know if anyone has gone through the same thing, but if you have, or you know someone close to you and you saw it, it’s really f—ing bad.”
She told fans that miscarriage is “something that you can’t ever really prepare to go through.”
“This song is for anybody that needs that hug,” she said. “I hope this song can help you as it’s helped me.”
Powerful Lyrics Capture the Grief She Still Carries
As Jessie began to sing, she turned away from the crowd to wipe her tears. The room grew even more emotional as she delivered raw lyrics including, “There’s no one to blame, you just slipped away,” “I’m sorry that we never met,” and “I hate how much I miss the future that we never made.”
Jessie first revealed her miscarriage in November 2021 in a deeply personal Instagram post. She shared that she had “decided to have a baby” on her own but was told during a routine scan that there was “no longer a heartbeat.”
“By yesterday afternoon I was dreading the thought of getting through the gig without breaking down,” she wrote at the time.
Jessie has since welcomed her son, Sky, whom she shares with her boyfriend, Chanan Safir Colman.
A New Album Born From Heartbreak and Healing
The emotional performance also coincided with the release of Jessie’s new album, “Don’t Tease Me With a Good Time.”
The “Price Tag” singer had opened up about her miscarriage before, sharing the experience in a May 2022 episode of “The Diary of a CEO With Steven Bartlett.” Jessie recalled how she felt after doctors told her in November 2021 that her baby’s heart had stopped beating. “I remember just going home and not processing it,” she said.
Several tracks reflect the losses she has faced in recent years, including her miscarriage, the death of her longtime bodyguard Dave in 2018, and her breast cancer diagnosis earlier this year.
Jessie announced her diagnosis on Instagram in June, sharing the news with characteristic honesty and humor.
“It’s a very dramatic way to get a boob job,” she joked.
She told fans she learned she had early-stage breast cancer shortly before releasing “No Secrets” and “Living My Best Life.”
“Before ‘No Secrets’ came out, I was diagnosed with early stage breast cancer. I’m highlighting the word ‘early.’ Cancer sucks in any form, but I’m holding on to the word ‘early.’”
She added that what weighed on her most was knowing how many others silently endure their own battles.
“It breaks my heart that so many people are going through so much. Similar and worse. That’s the bit that kills me.”
Through every setback, Jessie has stayed open, self-aware, and unafraid to use humor as armor. She once told fans she would return “with massive tits and more music,” and her London show proved she wasn’t exaggerating.
Her performance of “Comes in Waves” was raw, heartbreaking, and profoundly human, a moment that reminded fans why she remains a voice of resilience.
Standing onstage, grieving and healing in real time, Jessie showed that her story isn’t only about loss. It’s about survival, and the powerful music she’s creating from it.
