According to local authorities, Forté, 50, was found unresponsive inside his Martha’s Vineyard residence, as reported by MV Times. His death was confirmed by Chilmark Police, who said a cause has not yet been officially determined.

Police Chief Sean Slavin said a neighbor discovered Forté alone on the kitchen floor and called 911 at 2:25 p.m. Officers arrived minutes later and found him not breathing. Forté was pronounced dead at the scene. “There is no foul play suspected,” Slavin said.

A Career Defined by Collaboration & Cultural Impact

Forté was best known for his work in the 1990s with the Refugee Camp All-Stars, a collective closely associated with the legendary hip-hop group Fugees.

He also earned critical acclaim for his contributions to the Fugees’ seminal album “The Score,” which earned him a Grammy nomination.

Following news of his death, Fugees founding member Wyclef Jean paid tribute on Instagram.

“This one hurts my brother John Forté has joined the Angels,” Wyclef wrote, adding, “Legends never Die … R I P my Refugee brother.”

Beyond his early hip-hop success, Forté continued creating across genres and generations.

On Martha’s Vineyard, he frequently collaborated and performed with musicians including Carly Simon, her son Ben Taylor, and songwriter Peter More.

Forté was deeply rooted in the Vineyard’s artistic community, where he was widely admired not only for his talent but also for his generosity and empathy.

In recent years, he collaborated with More on the score for the documentary “Kerouac’s Road: The Beat of a Nation,” which explores the legacy of writer Jack Kerouac.

In 2024, Forté completed work on the score for a six-part HBO series that revived “Eyes on the Prize,” the landmark civil rights documentary first aired on PBS in the 1980s. The updated series chronicles the Black experience in America following the Civil Rights era.

Community members described Forté as being in an exceptionally creative and productive chapter of his life, making the loss even more devastating.

Remembered as a Devoted Father & Friend

Beyond his music, Forté was a devoted father whose love for his children was well known to those around him. Friends said he spoke about them with constant pride and joy.

Slavin, who knew Forté socially for years, reflected on the impact of his death within the close-knit Island community.

“It is such a small community; this death hits close to home,” he said, as reported by MV Times. “It’s the upside and the downside to living on such a small Island.”

As per MV Times, while the medical examiner’s report is pending, family friends confirmed that Forté experienced a serious health scare one year ago after suffering a seizure and had been taking medication to manage the condition. He would have turned 51 on January 30.

As tributes continue to pour in, John Forté is being remembered as a brilliant artist, a generous collaborator, and a loving father whose influence reached far beyond the stage.
