Beloved folk musician Tucker Zimmerman has died. Zimmerman and his wife, Marie-Claire Lambert, were tragically involved in a house fire and passed away at their home in Saint-Georges-sur-Meuse, Belgium, on Jan. 17, 2026, Paste reports. The Belgium-based, American-born singer-songwriter was 84.
Remembering Tucker Zimmerman
A local news publication in Belgium reported Zimmerman and his wife’s passing, and the article was translated and reported by Paste. Their deaths were caused by “asphyxiation after a fire broke out in their home,” Paste reports.
Zimmerman and Lambert had a close bond and would sing together. In an interview with Paste, he spoke about their relationship. “We sing a lot together around the house,” he said. “In the ‘70s, when I was doing many of those gigs across Belgium and Germany, she was driving me—because I don’t drive—so I asked her to come on stage and we would just reproduce a couple of songs—what we’d done at the house, singing together, harmonies. She sang quite a bit with me in public during the ‘70s, and she’s even on a couple of the albums from during that time.”
Zimmerman was popular in the folk music scene and was even praised by David Bowie for his talents. “The guy’s way too qualified for folk, in my opinion,” Bowie said in an interview, Elsewhere reports. “Degrees in theory and composition, studying under composer Henry Onderdonk, Fulbright scholarship, and he wants to be Dylan. A waste of an incendiary talent? Not in my opinion. I always found this album of stern, angry compositions enthralling.”
Tributes Pour In
An Instagram post on Zimmerman’s official account announced his death on Sunday, January 18. They posted a photo of the musician and his loving wife embracing. “There are very sad reports from Belgian media this morning regarding a tragedy. They report Marie-Claire & Tucker have lost their lives,” the caption reads. “Our love and prayers go to their family. When there is more news from the family, we will post again. Love to all.”
Fans reacted to the post with loving messages. “They were such incredible people and brought a whole new meaning to life and love with their music and voices,” a comment reads. “rest in peace, i’m so sorry to everyone who was close to them. the music will live forever.”
“The most beautiful people,” a second comment states.
Other reactions include, “Our love to the family,” “Truly awful news to wake up to. Love to everyone who loved them,” and “May these sweet souls rest peacefully.”
