Sabrina Carpenter Defends Her Controversial Album Cover

Pop sensation and former Disney Channel star Sabrina Carpenter has defended her controversial album cover and attempted to explain the meaning behind the image. “Man’s Best Friend” released earlier this year and caused something of a stir when it was first unveiled, but the musician has now attempted to reveal her motivation behind the album cover and what it means to her on a personal level.

Sabrina Carpenter Explains ‘Man’s Best Friend’ Album Cover

The album cover for “Man’s Best Friend” caused controversy as soon as it was announced. It features Carpenter kneeling on the floor on all fours while a man in a suit can be seen holding her hair. The singer was criticized for what some felt was a cover designed to appeal to men and degrade women by showcasing Carpenter in a submissive pose.

Although Carpenter subsequently released several alternative cover designs, she did not shy away from the media attention that the album cover generated. Now, though, she has also explained exactly why she chose this imagery and what the cover was intended to symbolize.

Speaking to Variety as part of the outlet’s Hitmakers issue, Carpenter stressed that her own experiences with romantic relationships inspired the artwork. “It was about how people try to control women, and how I felt emotionally yanked around by these relationships that I had, and how much power you’re allowing yourself to give them,” Carpenter said.

She continued: “It meant one thing to me and 100 things to other people, and I was looking at it going, ‘That’s valid. Mine’s valid. What’s for dinner?’”

“Not to bypass the weight that it did carry for some people. I saw it and was like, ‘That’s a great point. It wasn’t the point I was trying to make.’”

Future Looks Bright For Sabrina Carpenter

With her wildly successful “Short n’ Sweet Tour” coming to an end, Carpenter may no longer be arresting A-list celebrities, but that doesn’t mean she doesn’t have plenty of upcoming projects. It was recently reported that she will take center stage in an “Alive in Wonderland” film adaptation.

The news suggests that the singer will star and produce the musical, which Universal Pictures is backing. Meanwhile, “Hustlers” director Lorene Scafaria is helming the project, with producers Leslie Morgenstein and Elysa Koplovitz Dutton of Alloy Entertainment.

According to the reports, Carpenter has been heavily involved in getting the project off the ground and was instrumental in pitching the idea to Universal Pictures last year.
