Fans of classic soul and doo-wop music are mourning the death of a popular ’60s singer and The Marcels bandmate, Walt Maddox, who passed away at 80. The group is perhaps best known for its song “Blue Moon,” from 1961. Now, fans are paying tribute to his legacy.
The Post-Gazette confirmed on March 31 that Maddox had passed away the day prior. His friend, Henry DeLuca, said on social media, “He was a good guy. We’ve been friends for years. He had integrity and he was the surviving member who kept that group going. He was firm about certain things, but we got along very well and worked together many times.”

Tributes Are Pouring In For Walt Maddox
Maddox was mostly active in music from the 1960s until the 80s. However, despite not being the most prolific, his legacy lives on, and many of his fans are taking to social media to pay tribute.
The official 94.5 3WS radio station was among the tributes. They posted to Facebook, “MIKE F: **SO SAD to have to share the news of the passing of “The Marcel’s” WALT MADDOX…he was 88. Walt was a GIANT of a man…in the music world, and in life. Walt dedicated his life to serving and entertaining others, and he appeared at many 3WS Events over the years. I was so blessed to bear witness to him “in action” many times, and even more blessed to be able to call him FRIEND. God Bless YOU, Walter…Rest Well…and THANKS!”
Someone else said, “A music legend to many, but a dear friend to us. We had so many great times together. You left a mark on this world, and in our hearts. Rest in peace, Walt. You were one of a kind. Love to the Maddox family and prayers for healing hearts.
A fan who also knew Maddox wrote, “Walt was such a fine gentleman. He was like family. We always enjoyed seeing him and Terry.”
A different Facebook user wrote, “Walt, your memory will live on… Your legacy will continue to inspire us all, and your music will live on in our hearts.”
Lastly, another of Maddox’s friends said, “Today, my good friend Walt Maddox passed away. He’s now singing with the Angels. Rest in peace, Buddy.”
His Legacy Will Live On
Per the Post-Gazette, Maddox began his music career as a street singer in Manchester, Pittsburgh, and as a member of The Blenders. After that, he joined The Marcels in the summer of 1961, following a shakeup in the group.
From there, the first song he appeared on with the group was “Heartaches,” which rose to number seven on the chart. Later, he pursued a solo career and developed a tribute show to Nat King Cole. Later, he toured with The Marcels. He will be missed.
