Netflix Just Confirmed the Future of ‘KPop Demon Hunters’

Netflix is officially bringing back the supernatural K-pop world of “KPop Demon Hunters.” The streaming platform has confirmed that a sequel to the animated hit is in development, with directors Maggie Kang and Chris Appelhans returning to lead the next chapter.

The upcoming film will mark the first project under Kang and Appelhans’ new exclusive multi-year writing and directing deal with Netflix focused on animation, according to Netflix’s Tudum. Sony Pictures Animation will again produce the sequel as the creative team looks to expand the story that became one of the streamer’s biggest successes.

The original film debuted in June 2025 and quickly grew into a global phenomenon. The fantasy musical follows fictional K-pop superstars Rumi, Mira and Zoey of the group HUNTR/X, who secretly battle supernatural threats while maintaining their careers as world-famous pop idols.

Netflix executives say the film’s enormous popularity helped spark the decision to move forward with another installment.

A Global Streaming Phenomenon

Since its release, “KPop Demon Hunters” has racked up massive viewership and fan engagement worldwide. According to Deadline, the film has generated hundreds of millions of views on Netflix and helped ignite a global fandom that stretches across generations and cultures.

The music from the film also made waves. The fictional group HUNTR/X reached No. 1 on the Billboard Hot 100, while their track “Golden” became the first K-pop song to win a Grammy Award within the film’s fictional universe. Deadline also reports the soundtrack has been streamed roughly 11 billion times globally.

The movie’s success extended beyond streaming. Netflix even released a special sing-along theatrical version of the film during fan events in fall 2025, further fueling the movie’s popularity among audiences.

Chief Content Officer Bela Bajaria praised the impact the film had on viewers. “With ‘KPop Demon Hunters,’ Maggie and Chris didn’t just reach audiences, they ignited a global fandom that crossed languages, generations and genres,” she said.

While plot details for the sequel remain under wraps, the creative team says there is still much more story to tell in the world they built.

Kang said the response to the film has been especially meaningful from a cultural perspective. “I feel immense pride as a Korean filmmaker that the audience wants more from this Korean story and our Korean characters,” she said, according to Netflix Tudum. “There’s so much more to this world we have built.”

Appelhans echoed that excitement and said the characters have become deeply personal for the filmmakers. “These characters are like family to us,” he said. “We’re excited to write their next chapter, challenge them and watch them evolve.”

As fans wait for more details about the sequel, Kang left audiences with a clear message about the future of the franchise: “This is only the beginning.”
