What was meant to be a final bow became something far more unforgettable! On Sunday, February 22, Sofie Bertolini stepped onto the stage at the Tobin Center for the Performing Arts for the last time as a principal with Ballet San Antonio.
After 14 years with the company, she closed that chapter performing the title role in “Cinderella.” But as the curtain call unfolded, the evening took an unexpected turn.
Audience Cheers as Ballet Couple Gets Engaged After ‘Cinderella’ Performance
By her side stood her real-life partner and fellow principal, Michael Agudelo. As applause echoed through the Tobin Center, Agudelo stepped forward and dropped to one knee. In a video later shared by Ballet San Antonio on Instagram, he extends a ring as Bertolini’s face moves from confusion to stunned realization.
Once it clicked, she wrapped her arms around him.
The two shared a kiss while dancers gathered around them, and the audience rose in cheers. What had already been an emotional farewell transformed into a moment that felt straight out of the pages of “Cinderella” itself.
A 14-Year Career Ends With a Fairytale. Twist
As per the official website, Bertolini joined Ballet San Antonio in 2014 and rose to principal in 2023. Her final appearance at the Tobin Center carried deep significance.
He closed her 14-year chapter with the company, dancing the lead in “Cinderella,” opposite Agudelo as the Prince.
In the days leading up to the performance, Ballet San Antonio paid tribute to her impact, describing her as “a mesmerizing performer” and a guiding presence within the company.
“Tomorrow’s performance of Cinderella marks her final appearance on the Tobin stage — a moment filled with gratitude, celebration, and well-earned applause,” the company shared. “Join us as we celebrate Sofie’s extraordinary career and witness her take her final, breathtaking bow.”
What neither Bertolini nor the audience realized at the time was that the evening would deliver an ending as magical as the ballet itself.
‘What a Magical Weekend’: Bertolini Reflects
After saying yes, Bertolini let her joy show. She bounced with excitement as Agudelo placed the ring on her finger, then embraced him again while still en pointe. With her fiancé beside her, she took another bow, this time to even louder cheers.
Ballet San Antonio shared the moment on Instagram, writing, “We’re not crying, you’re crying! 🥹. She said yes! 💍. Congratulations @sssbert and @michael_agudem! We couldn’t be happier for you! ❤️❤️❤️.”
Later, Bertolini reflected on the emotional weekend in her own post. “What a magical weekend,” she wrote. “I’m so overwhelmed with gratitude – I’ve spent a third of my life dancing with @balletsa performing on the @tobincentersa stage, and that chapter has closed. As I sit here in the aftermath of ,it all I can genuinely say I have no regrets, only joy.”
A Full-Circle ‘Cinderella’ Moment
GettyA few days before the final performance, Bertolini shared in a Facebook video that performing “Cinderella” as her farewell role felt especially meaningful.
“Cinderella has always been such an important ballet to me. It was my first full-length production in my youth ballet company, and I would watch the video over and over again. I’m just really excited that I get to perform as Cinderella. I feel like my life is coming full circle. I just can’t help but feel all the feelings when I listen to it, so it’s going to be a really meaningful performance for me.”
After the proposal, audience members flooded social media with messages of celebration.
“Congratulations!! A real-life princess story!!!” one person wrote.
Another attendee shared, “Such a beautiful moment!!! I was in tears!!!” A third simply described it as a “fairytale moment.”
For Bertolini and Agudelo, the stage that closed one chapter of her career opened another in her personal life, turning a final bow into a beginning that felt as magical as the ballet itself!
