Veteran Scottish actor Donald Douglas, best known for his affectionate portrayal of Admiral James “Jas” Darcy — the father of Mark Darcy in the “Bridget Jones” films — has died at age 92, his family announced.
Douglas passed away on January 14, 2026, in a hospital in Albi, France, following a short illness, leaving behind a long legacy of performances across film and television that endeared him to generations of fans.
His obituary stated, “Dear family and friends, it is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Donald Douglas on Wednesday, January 14, 2026, in Albi.”
Douglas was born March 7, 1933, in Falkirk, Scotland, and trained at the Royal Academy of Dramatic Art in London after early education at Edinburgh College of Art.
Douglas Had an Impressive Career
His career spanned more than six decades, beginning in repertory theatre and expanding into stage, television and film. He appeared in classic productions ranging from “War and Peace” and “Poldark” to beloved British television series such as “Doctor Who” and “The Avengers,” according to IMDb.
But to many around the world, he was best known for his heartfelt role in the globally popular “Bridget Jones” franchise — appearing in “Bridget Jones’s Diary,” “The Edge of Reason” and “Bridget Jones’s Baby” as the warm, witty father of Mark Darcy, played by Colin Firth.
His calm, reassuring presence added depth and genuine warmth to the films’ mix of romance and comedy.

In the montage, she recalled his multifaceted life, noting that he was a gifted painter and sculptor, a skilled ceramic restorer and a devoted gardener whose home was filled with creative energy.
“Donald was talented in so many ways apart from acting and performing. A playful and gifted artist, he worked with all kinds of media, from sculpture to paint. He was an expert in ceramic restoration,” she wrote in the description. “He laid a beautiful table and was a fabulous cook. It was a joy to attend a meal at his beautiful home with his partner, Emma Temple.”
