It is a sad day: the news of Diane Keaton’s passing was announced on Saturday, October 11. She was 79. “There are no further details available at this time, and her family has asked for privacy in this moment of great sadness,” a spokesperson told People. 

Fans and celebrities are heartbroken, and social media has been flooded with tributes for the beloved star. Keaton had an incredible career, with standout projects like “The First Wives Club” and “Annie Hall,” for which she won an Oscar in 1977 for Best Actress. Despite having a fulfilling career, Keaton was also a mother to two children.

Diane Keaton Discusses Adoption

Keaton is survived by her two children, daughter Dexter and son Duke. There is interest in Keaton’s love life, and some of her past romantic relationships include Woody Allen, Al Pacino, and Warren Beatty. However, she did not have children with any of these men. She also never married, but this was not a decision she regretted. 

Keaton adopted her kids in 1996 and 2001, respectively. Raising her children as a single mother in her 50s was something the star embraced. “I didn’t think that I was ever going to be prepared to be a mother,” she told “Ladies’ Home Journal,” People reports. “Motherhood was not an urge I couldn’t resist. It was more like a thought I’d been thinking for a very long time. So I plunged in.”

The beloved actress chose to raise her children out of the spotlight, respecting their privacy despite the path she chose for herself. However, they have at times accompanied her red carpet events, giving a rare glimpse into their relationship with their famous mom.

Keaton’s kids have no intention of becoming actors. “They have no interest in what I do, which I think is very healthy,” Keaton said at her Hand & Footprint Ceremony in 2022, People reports. “We live a relatively normal — well, sort of normal — life.”

Keaton’s children’s social media has been flooded with an outpouring of love and support from fans. On October 12, 2023, Dexter posted a photo on Instagram of herself and her mother. They are dressed warmly, and Dexter is smiling widely. Fans have reacted in the comment section.
