Actor Elijah Wood has hinted that he may be returning to the world of Middle-earth in the upcoming prequel “The Lord of the Rings: The Hunt for Gollum.” Wood memorably portrayed the hobbit Frodo Baggins in Peter Jackson’s original trilogy and has since briefly reprised the role in “The Hobbit” trilogy.
In a new interview, Wood has teased that he could play Frodo once again but wouldn’t confirm that he had joined the cast of the Andy Serkis film.
Elijah Wood Talks About Possible Return to ‘The Lord of the Rings’
GettyIn an interview with The Times, the Hollywood star was asked about the possibility of appearing in “The Lord of the Rings: The Hunt for Gollum.” The prequel is being directed by Serkis and produced by Jackson, Fran Walsh, and Philippa Boyens who all worked on the original trilogy.
Wood’s reply heavily suggests that he is returning to the role of Frodo and references the fact that Ian McKellen had all but confirmed the news last year.
“It hasn’t been officially announced, but at a convention last August, Ian sort of let the cat out of the bag,” he explained. “So there is a good chance. I’m not able to officially say anything until it’s announced, but I will say I’m thrilled with the prospect of another film.
“It’s always a little nerve-racking when people talk about new movies for a world like Middle-earth. Everyone gets a little protective and hopes it retains its level of integrity, but this story is fun, thrilling. There is a genuine feeling of getting the band back together. I’m just excited.”
He added, “I certainly wouldn’t want anybody else to play Frodo either as long as I’m alive and able. And I can also recognize what fun that is going to be — when you are in the cinema and you see the hat turn around and it’s Gandalf. Because I’m also a fan, and excited to see how it all comes together.”
Rumors About Casting of New Movie Persist
This is not the first time that Wood has been linked with a return to “The Lord of the Rings” franchise. Back in January, Wood himself made comments that many interpreted as an admission that he would reprise the role of the young hobbit.
“I can neither confirm nor deny. Listen, a wizard is to be trusted,” Wood told ScreenRant at Fan Expo New Orleans. “Aside from any of that, I’m not really allowed to confirm.”
This followed comments made by McKellen, who has confirmed he is returning as Gandalf. “I hear there’s going to be another movie based in Middle-earth, and it’s going to start filming in May. It’s going to be directed by Gollum, and it’s all about Gollum,” McKellen shared
“I’ll tell you two secrets about the casting: There’s a character in the movie called Frodo, and there’s a character in the movie called Gandalf. Apart from that, my lips are sealed!”
The film will focus on Gandalf and Aragorn as they attempt to track down Gollum to discover the true nature of the ring he previously owned before it was taken by Bilbo Baggins. It is expected to hit cinema screens on December 17, 2027.
