“Heated Rivalry” quickly became one of the breakout hits of the year after arriving on HBO Max around Thanksgiving. Based on the “Game Changers” book series by Rachel Reid, the Canadian sports drama centers on rival professional hockey players Shane Hollander and Ilya Rozanov, whose on-ice competition gives way to a secret romantic relationship.
The six-episode first season wrapped on December 27, drawing strong engagement and landing the series at the top of the streamer’s trending list. With season 2 already confirmed, fans looking for similarly character-driven, emotionally charged stories have several strong options to explore in the meantime.
‘Normal People’
Viewers who connected with the emotional push and pull between Shane and Ilya may want to check out “Normal People.” The series follows Marianne Sheridan (Daisy Edgar Jones) and Connell Waldron (Paul Mescal) as they move in and out of each other’s lives from high school into early adulthood.
Like “Heated Rivalry,” it takes a close look at intimacy and vulnerability without relying on big twists or gimmicks.
“Normal People” is available to stream on Hulu.
‘Fellow Travelers’
“Fellow Travelers” follows two men whose relationship develops and changes over several decades, set against major moments in American history. The series stars Jonathan Bailey as Tim Laughlin and Matt Bomer as Hawkins Fuller and is adapted from the novel of the same name.
The show focuses on how politics, social pressure, and the times they live in shape their ability to be together. Viewers who connected with the secrecy and emotional strain in Shane and Ilya’s relationship on “Heated Rivalry” may recognize similar challenges in this story.
“Fellow Travelers” can be streamed on multiple platforms.
‘Outlander’
“Outlander” is set in a very different time and place, but it centers on a single love story. Based on the novels by Diana Gabaldon, the series follows Claire Randall (Caitriona Balfe) a World War II nurse who is transported back to 18th-century Scotland, where she meets and falls in love with Jamie Fraser (Sam Heughan).
The story unfolds across multiple seasons and locations, focusing on how their relationship survives long separations, danger, and major life changes.
Seasons 1-7 of “Outlander” are available to stream on the STARZ app. Season 8, which is the final season, premieres March 6, 2026.
‘Bridgerton’
“Bridgerton” approaches romance from a lighter, more stylized angle, but it still centers on how relationships play out in the public eye. Each season follows a different member of the Bridgerton family as they navigate love and reputation in Regency-era London.
Much like “Heated Rivalry,” the series highlights the tension between private feelings and public expectations.
Seasons 1-3 are available on Netflix. Part 1 of season 4 of “Bridgerton” premieres January 29, 2026, with four episodes, followed by Part 2 on February 26, 2026.
‘Young Royals’
“Heated Rivalry” places a strong emphasis on fame and pressure, which is also central to “Young Royals.” The Swedish series follows Prince Wilhelm as he attends an elite boarding school and forms a relationship with fellow student Simon Eriksson.
“Young Royals” is available to stream on Netflix.
Fans can stream “Heated Rivalry” on HBO Max.
