The news that Robert Redford passed away broke on September 16. Since then, Hollywood has been in mourning for the beloved actor and director. However, many are also remembering him for the activist that he was. This includes former Secretary of State and First Lady Hillary Clinton.
Clinton took to Instagram to post a photo of herself with former President Bill Clinton and Redford. She captioned the post, “I always admired Robert Redford, not only for his legendary career as an actor and director but for what came next.”
Clinton then said, “He championed progressive values like protecting the environment and access to the arts while creating opportunities for new generations of activists and filmmakers. A true American icon.”
As Clinton alluded to, Redford was a staunch environmental activist in addition to being a celebrated actor and director.
Redford Passed While Surrounded by Family
As mentioned, Redford passed away on the morning of September 16. According to USA Today, he was at his home in Utah and surrounded by loved ones. His representative, Cindi Berger, told the outlet that he was at “the place he loved, surrounded by those he loved.”
She also stated, “He will be missed greatly. The family requests privacy.” His cause of death is unknown at this time. Redford was 89 at the time of his passing. The beloved actor is survived by his wife, Sibylle Szaggars, whom he married in 2009. He also leaves behind two children.
Fans are Paying Tribute to His Legacy
Many are taking to social media to pay tribute to Redford for both his acting work and his activism. One person wrote, “BREAKING: RobertRedford dead at 89. Redford received the Presidential Medal of Freedom from Barack Obama. He also fought hard against Climate change denial and helped with work at the EPA. RIP”

Another tribute to Redford reads, “Robert Redford is one of my favourite actors. When I was skiing at Park City years ago, I got to follow Robert up the chairlift—such a memory. “Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid” and “Sting” are two of my favourite movies. Robert passed today, it’s so sad. R.I.P”
