Kate Hudson and Gwyneth Paltrow are proving that some Hollywood friendships really do stand the test of time. What started as a starstruck moment in a Los Angeles boutique has grown into a decades-long bond that both actresses now describe as family.
From fangirl beginnings to award show tributes, the pair have openly celebrated each other in recent weeks, offering a rare look at a friendship rooted in loyalty, shared history and genuine support.
From Starstruck Encounter to Sisterly Bond
Long before they were close friends, Hudson was simply a fan. During a 2019 appearance on “The Ellen DeGeneres Show,” Hudson admitted she first encountered Paltrow in high school at a Los Angeles store and “just sort of stalked” her instead of introducing herself. Hudson recalled watching Paltrow shop during her “short-hair Gwyneth years,” even buying the same clothes she picked out. She eventually managed a quick “Hi,” which Paltrow returned, and that was it.
Their families already moved in similar circles. Paltrow’s parents, Blythe Danner and Bruce Paltrow, were friendly with Hudson’s parents, Goldie Hawn and Kurt Russell. But it was not until the early 2000s that Hudson and Paltrow formed the close friendship they share today.
That bond deepened when both women were living in England. Hudson told People that Paltrow became a “huge support system” for her and her son during that time. Today, Paltrow is affectionately known as “Auntie Gwyneth” to Hudson’s three children.
“She’s always been there for me, like the most loyal, beautiful friend,” Hudson said. “And I look up to her.”
Celebrating Each Other’s Milestones

Their sisterly dynamic was on full display Feb. 13 at the Santa Barbara International Film Festival, where Paltrow presented Hudson with the Arlington Artist of the Year Award for her Oscar-nominated role in “Song Sung Blue.”
Paltrow described Hudson as “like a little sister to me,” reflecting on how they “grew up in the same orbit” before becoming especially close in adulthood. She also praised Hudson as “an amazing artist, an entrepreneur, obviously an incredible singer and a mother.”
Paltrow shared that she FaceTimed Hudson after watching “Song Sung Blue” and “burst into tears,” explaining she felt the role finally showcased “all of what you can do.”
Hudson returned the admiration at the festival, calling Paltrow “unapologetically who she is” and “as strong as anybody I’ve ever met.” She also said seeing Paltrow in “Marty Supreme” reminded her how much she enjoys watching her friend act.
From teenage fangirl to lifelong confidante, Hudson summed up their relationship simply when she told People that Paltrow has “always been there for me, like the most loyal, beautiful friend.”
