‘Grateful’ Kerry Washington Speaks Up in Defense of Jimmy Kimmel

Kerry Washington is the latest addition to celebrities publicly showing support for Jimmy Kimmel.

In an Instagram post shared on Thursday, September 18, the “Scandal” actress came to the defense of the “Jimmy Kimmel Live!” host.

“@jimmykimmel, you’ve supported me, my work, and my voice for years, and I’m endlessly grateful for your friendship, partnership, the laughter, and encouragement. Now it’s my turn to stand with and for you,” the actress captioned a photo with Kimmel. “Your immense kindness, integrity and generosity inspire everyone around you. What’s happening to you, and across late night is not just unfair, it’s unjust.”

Kerry Washington’s Post Draws Mixed Reactions

Aside from Kimmel, Washington also voiced her support for Stephen Colbert, whose talk show “The Late Show With Stephen Colbert” was abruptly canceled.

“Silencing voices like yours and @stephenathome goes far beyond just entertainment; it threatens freedom of speech, an independent press, and ultimately, our democracy,” the actress continued. ” You are not alone. I stand with you, my friend. Always.”

Fans in the comments praised Washington for standing up for Kimmel and echoed her sentiments.

One fan referenced her “Scandal” character, “We need Olivia Pope more than ever.”

Another chimed in, “Kerry called Jimmy and said, ‘It’s handled’.”

Someone wrote, “I’m so glad everyone is standing with him. Freedom of speech is of imperative importance.”

Another commented, “And because she spoke up, y’all better not try it with scandal either or we RIDE AT DAWN!!!!”

Meanwhile, others criticized Washington’s support for Kimmel.

Someone wrote, “Imagine losing your life not your job, but your life ??!”

Another commented, “Y’all praise someone that got their show cancelled for speaking his mind, but don’t show love to someone who died for it? Crazy work.”

A Look Back Into ‘Jimmy Kimmel Live!’ Cancelation

Jimmy Kimmel’s show has been canceled indefinitely.

“Jimmy Kimmel Live!” was yanked from ABC on September 17, after major affiliate group Nexstar dropped the show in response to Kimmel’s remarks about Charlie Kirk.

Similarly, Sinclair Broadcast Group pulled the talk show from its ABC stations, calling on Kimmel to donate to Kirk’s family and Turning Point USA.

On Monday’s episode of “Jimmy Kimmel Live!”, Kimmel made comments in his monologue that didn’t sit well with some viewers.

“We had some new lows over the weekend with the MAGA gang desperately trying to characterize this kid who murdered Charlie Kirk as anything other than one of them and with everything they can to score political points from it,” Kimmel said at the time.
