Steve Martin was forced to cancel his September 19 and September 20 comedy shows, during which he was slated to perform with his “Only Murders in the Building” costar Martin Short, after contracting COVID-19. The 80-year-old took to his Instagram to write, “Dear Virginia Beach and Richmond. Sadly, I have come down with Covid. I can’t possibly do the shows that you deserve. So Marty and I must cancel tonight & tomorrow.” He added the pair plans to continue the tour “under better circumstances.”
Martin chose a funny picture of a dog wearing a Mickey Mouse ears hat from Disneyland to break the disappointing news.
Later, the “Roxanne” star posted a second photo that showed a positive COVID-19 test. He joked, “Hey! No flu!”
Fans Sent Well-Wishes to Steve Martin
Martin’s followers flooded his Instagram comments with sweet messages of support after he announced the cancelled shows. One wrote, “Get well soon. Snuggle that dog.”
Another commented, “Sending love that you get better soon!”
“Oh my, Steve Martin! Please take care of yourself! We have plenty of old videos of you to keep us laughing until you are better. Be well,” wrote another admirer.
Martin’s next show on the tour is scheduled for October 4 in Florida, according to Stubhub.
Steve Martin On ‘Putting Up’ With Martin Short
During a GMA appearance by Martin and his costar Steve Short at the beginning of the month, Selena Gomez popped onto the screen to ask her costar the question, “How do you put up with Martin?” The comedian hilariously replied, “You know, Martin and I do shows together. And what I do is, I do an early blue tape and red tape. I put the blue tape on the floor from my dressing room to the stage, and then I do a different route for Martin in red. So we never actually run into each other.”
GettyShort jumped into add, “We’re like an old married couple. We have dinner in total silence.”
Martin then said he prefers to call his relationship with his costar a “funship” rather than a friendship.
Season 5 of Martin, Short, and Gomez’s comedy mystery series “Only Murders in the Building” premiered on Hulu September 9, and Short opened up about what makes the new season great. He said, “What amazes me about season 5 is the quality that the writers are creating from season to season.” Martin agreed, “You can do comedy, but you’ve gotta have that story in there.” Short also praised the show’s lineup of guest stars.
