In an emotional sit-down with Robin Roberts on “Good Morning America”, Pamela recalled the devastating moment she learned about her son’s death. She said she let out a scream so thunderous that neighbors came running.

Pamela explained that the family trip to Costa Rica was tied to her granddaughter’s homeschooling program. “His wife and daughter had been in Costa Rica three weeks prior,” she shared. “It was the last week, for the husbands to come. This was the fun part.”

She also clarified that her granddaughter was not in the water, despite earlier reports. “She was not in the water. He was with another gentleman,” Pamela said.

“They were in the water, maybe chest deep. Even at that, maybe waist-deep. There was an undertow.” She explained that the other man was able to escape because he was more experienced, while Warner struggled as an inexperienced swimmer.

News of Warner’s death shocked Hollywood, and tributes poured in from peers and former costars, including Keshia Knight Pulliam, Tracee Ellis Ross, Angela Bassett, and Beyoncé. Many remembered him not only for his role on “The Cosby Show” but also for the kindness and warmth he carried throughout his career.

Emmy Awards Tribute Honors the Late Star

At the 77th Primetime Emmy Awards, Warner was honored during the “In Memoriam” segment. His former TV mother, Phylicia Rashad, paid tribute while presenting. “Like all our friends and colleagues who transitioned this past year, Malcolm-Jamal Warner remains in our hearts,” she said on stage.

Rashad reflected on Warner’s legacy as a “beloved teenager in an iconic television series who the world watched grow into manhood.” She added, “Even though they may no longer be here with us, we can all smile knowing that their impact will remain, knowing that their lasting impressions will continue to live on through story, knowing that they touched our lives.”
