Rick Moranis is officially stepping back into the spotlight. The 72-year-old actor, best known for “Honey, I Shrunk the Kids,” will reprise his fan-favorite role as Dark Helmet in the upcoming comedy sequel “Spaceballs 2,” Amazon MGM Studios announced on September 25.

The film marks Moranis’ first live-action role in nearly three decades, following 1997’s “Honey, We Shrunk Ourselves.” His last screen credit came in 2006, when he voiced a character in “Brother Bear 2.”
The announcement follows Deadline’s report more than three months ago, officially marking Moranis’ long-awaited return to live-action after nearly 30 years away.
Why Moranis Stepped Away From Hollywood
Moranis left Hollywood in the late 1990s after the death of his wife, Ann, who passed from cancer in 1991. By 1996, he stepped back from acting to raise their two children as a single parent.
“I pulled out of making movies in about ’96 or ’97,” Moranis told USA TODAY in 2005. “I just found it was too difficult to manage raising my kids and doing the traveling involved in making movies. So I took a little bit of a break, and the little bit of a break turned into a longer break.”
While often described as retired, Moranis clarified in 2015 that he never fully closed the door on acting. “I still get the occasional query about a film or television role, and as soon as one comes along that piques my interest, I’ll probably do it,” he told The Hollywood Reporter.
Revisiting Dark Helmet & ‘Spaceballs’ Legacy
The original 1987 “Spaceballs,” directed by Mel Brooks, parodied “Star Wars” and became a cult classic. Moranis’s over-the-top Dark Helmet remains one of his most memorable roles.
Moranis even reprised the character briefly in 2018 during an episode of the sitcom “The Goldbergs.” His official return for the sequel now reunites him with Brooks, 99, who will once again appear as Yogurt.
Josh Gad, who co-wrote the screenplay and will star in the movie, said working with Brooks has been “a dream come true.”
A Star-Studded Sequel on the Horizon
Directed by Josh Greenbaum, “Spaceballs 2” is shaping up to be a major comedy event. The star-studded cast features Moranis, Brooks, and Gad, alongside Keke Palmer, Bill Pullman, Lewis Pullman, and Anthony Carrigan.
Set for release in 2027, the sequel allows fans to revisit the original cult classic before the long-awaited follow-up hits theaters. For Moranis, the return is more than just a role: it’s the revival of a legacy that audiences have been waiting nearly 30 years to see again.
