VIDEO: Stephen Colbert Jokes About Getting Fired at the Emmy Awards

The news broke in July that CBS had decided to cancel “The Late Show with Stephen Colbert.” He then reacted to the news on the highly rated series, but now Colbert has made light of his firing at the 2025 Emmy Awards.

Colbert took to the stage and was immediately greeted with a standing ovation. After calming down the Emmy audience, the “Late Show” host joked, “But while I have your attention, is anyone hiring?”

Colbert then said, “Because I’ve got 200 very well-qualified candidates with me here tonight who will be available in June.” He continued, “I also brought my very own resume here with me tonight. I haven’t had a chance to update my headshot in a bit, but I think it still works.”

Colbert’s Initial Comments on the ‘Late Show’ Cancellation

The news of CBS canceling “The Late Show with Stephen Colbert” came on July 18. He took to the long-running series the same night to make an official announcement and provide his thoughts while in front of his studio audience.

Colbert said, “Before we start the show, I want to let you know something that I found out just last night. Next year will be our last season. The network will be ending The Late Show in May.” The former “Daily Show” host went on, “It’s not just the end of our show, but it’s the end of The Late Show on CBS. I’m not being replaced. This is all just going away.”

He added, “I’m grateful to you, the audience, who have joined us every night, in here, out there, all around the world… I’m extraordinarily, deeply grateful to the 200 people who work here. It is a fantastic job. I wish somebody else was getting it, and it’s a job that I’m looking forward to doing with this usual gang of idiots for another 10 months.”

Notably, the part of his speech at the 2025 Emmy Awards that mentioned 200 people was in regard to the staff and crew from the show.

The World Is His Oyster

It’s unclear what Colbert will do next. He has joked about starting a podcast, and many believe he could change the landscape with his commentary. However, according to US Weekly, he has an acting role lined up as he’s set to appear in the CBS series Elsbeth. In it, he will portray a talk show host.

“The Late Show” premiered in 1993 with then-host David Letterman. He remained as host until 2015, which is when Colbert took over. Despite its cancellation, “The Late Show with Stephen Colbert” remains one of the most-watched shows in the late-night space.
