Kathy Griffin Hospitalized After Colonoscopy Complications: Comedian Gives Health Update

Kathy Griffin, who delighted fans with her self-deprecating humor on her hit reality show “My Life on the D-List” that aired from 2005 to 2010, has announced she was admitted for a short hospital stay following a colonoscopy gone wrong.

The 65-year-old wrote in May 21 Instagram post, “Well, the sound got screwed up, but I made this video for you guys because I’m TMI anyway. I spent the night in the hospital because I had complications from my colonoscopy. I know, I know very sexy, but I am home now with the doggies where I belong.”

The comedian called her message a “not so tech savvy update” because her video failed to properly record the sound, and she ended up simply posting a screenshot of it. In the screenshot of the clip, the star wears a full face of makeup and looks lively, suggesting she’s well on her way to recovery after the momentary health scare.

Griffin’s fans wished her well after hearing the news. One wrote, “Ughโ€ฆ I’m so sorry this has happened. Bounce back, dear Kathy.” Another said, “All that matters is that you are better and home!! Keep resting โค๏ธ!”

Kathy Griffin Previously Urged People to Stay On Top of Their Checkups

Kathy Griffin is a cancer survivor, having undergone surgery for stage 1 lung cancer back in August of 2021. She announced her diagnosis to her fans in a Twitter message she shared shortly before her surgery, telling them, “Yes, I have lung cancer even though I’ve never smoked!”

The entertainer went on, “The doctors are very optimistic as it is stage one and contained to my left lung. Hopefully no chemo or radiation after this and I should have normal function with my breathing.”

She then reflected on her past 4 years, saying that juggling “trying to get back to work, making you guys laugh and entertaining you” had been a lot.

Griffin was likely referring to the turmoil caused by an edgy 2017 joke which sparked a wave of moral posturing and led CNN to terminate its longstanding relationship with the star. Most notably, Griffin lost her role as a co-host of CNN’s annual New Year’s Eve television special which she’d held since 2007.

Griffin was replaced as Anderson Cooper’s co-host by Bravo’s Andy Cohen, who has co-hosted the show for the past 9 years.

In her cancer announcement, Griffin made sure to speak out about the importance of early detection, writing, “Please stay up to date on your medical check ups. It’ll save your life.”

What Is Kathy Griffin Doing Now?

As of 2026, Griffin is focused on her YouTube show “Talk Your Head Off,” where she discusses pop culture and her latest adventures. She also continues to give live performances.

In the latest episode, which was published 2 days ago, she recounted her experience of being rushed by selfie-seeking fans following a May 16 performance in Hawaii. Griffin said she was amused to see security guards prying people’s hands off of her as some members of the crowd became over-enthusiastic, and thanked the team for looking out for her safety.

The spunky performer has a lot more tour dates coming up, with shows booked from September 2026 to March 2027.
