Beverley Mitchell Opens Up About Colon Cancer Scare: ‘Catch Things Early’

Beverley Mitchell recently shared a video on Instagram about a health scare she had years ago in hopes of encouraging fans to get tested early.

Mitchell vulnerably shared in the video that, in her early 30s, she thought she might have had colon cancer. However, a doctor’s visit (and her own self-advocacy) ultimately saved her life.

Beverley Mitchell Revealed She Had a ‘Precancerous Polyp’ in Her Early 30s

Beverley Mitchell said on her Instagram page that, while in her early 30s, she had blood work done. Her doctor noticed markers that were similar to those with colon cancer.

Mitchell advocated for testing from a gastroenterologist’s office and was able to get a colonoscopy.

“Come to find out, I had the biggest precancerous polyp he has ever seen in a young woman,” she vulnerably shared.

After that scare, the “7th Heaven” alum followed up three years later and had a clean bill of health. However, the actress admitted in the Instagram clip that it had been eight years since her last colonoscopy.

“I was well overdue,” she shared, as she was supposed to get colonoscopies every three years.

The actress noticed unnamed “signs” that pushed her to go to the doctor recently for testing. “I’m happy to report that my colonoscopy came back perfectly clean,” Mitchell revealed in the video.

Mitchell also admitted that the passing of James Van Der Beek from colon cancer was a huge motivator in getting her most recent colonoscopy. Van Der Beek died in February 2026 of the disease.

In the same Instagram video, Mitchell also encouraged viewers to get checked. “This is my PSA that, if you’ve been putting off your colonoscopy, go and get it now,” the “Special Forces” star stated.

Beverley Mitchell Previously Battled Another Cancer Scare During Her Third Pregnancy

Unfortunately, Beverley Mitchell has faced another big cancer scare previously, all while getting ready to give birth.

In 2020, Mitchell told Us Weekly that she had “to deal with skin cancer.” She was pregnant with her third child with husband Michael Cameron.

The actress added, “[I was] making sure I could get that removed while going through the pregnancy and going through [the coronavirus pandemic].”

Mitchell also revealed in that interview that she discovered she had a “thin uterine wall.” The “Secret Life of the American Teenager” star had to schedule a C-section.

“They’re actually fearful of me rupturing, so they have to deliver me before I even get close to my due date. I’m actually not allowed to go into contractions or anything,” Mitchell shared with Us Weekly at the time. “It’s a little scary, but I think that’s why they are extra cautious. So they’ll take me at 37 weeks.”

Mitchell later announced on Instagram that she gave birth to a healthy baby girl, Mayzel, in July 2020. Mayzel joined her older siblings, Kenzie and Hutton, to round out Mitchell’s family.
