What once drew gasps, cheers, and daily headlines now sparks disbelief in hindsight. In a new ABC docuseries revisiting the wildest era of daytime television, one legendary host admits that the format he helped make famous would never survive modern standards. From explosive confrontations to deeply personal revelations aired for millions, the series explores how a cultural moment that rewarded shock and spectacle collided with today’s expectations of accountability, consent, and care, and why that era of TV is firmly in the past.
‘A Little Over the Top’
The trailer for “Dirty Talk: When Daytime Talk Shows Ruled TV” starts with legendary talk show host Maury Povich asking, “Remember when Daytime Television was, well, let’s just say a little over the top?”
“Dirty Talk” is a three-part series from ABC, which premieres on Wednesday, January 14. It will take a look at the cultural legacy of America’s daytime talk shows, as PEOPLE reported.
In the trailer, we see some of the most iconic and memorable moments in daytime history. Of course, this includes Oprah Winfrey bringing out the wagon of fat to show her weight loss, crowds chanting “Jerry” on “The Jerry Springer Show,” and Povich’s signature line: “You are not the father!”
However, Povich made a big realization in the trailer: “I couldn’t do that show today?” He hosted his daytime talk show from 1991 to 2022.
‘Crazy’ Moments in Daytime Television
The series will take a look back at some of the “crazy” moments that became “normal” on daytime TV. This includes fighting, both verbal and physical. Povich added, “And America just couldn’t look away.”
Other shows that will be featured in the series include “Ricki Lake,” “The Geraldo Rivera Show,” “Sally,” and “The Montel Williams Show.”
These were all iconic shows during that time. Sally Jesse Raphael, who is now 90 years old, states in the trailer that they had one rule for the episodes: “The more controversial the better.”
Never-Before-Told Stories
In a press release, ABC said this new series will examine “the rise, fall, and lasting impact of the most sensational era in television talk show history. By exploring the psychological forces that shaped the talk TV genre, the series reveals how these shows transformed from trusted confessional spaces into lightning rods of controversy, leaving a lasting impact on culture, media, and the people caught in the chaos.”
The three episodes will include never-before-told stories from the hosts, producers, and insiders who “defined the talk TV world.” The series will include appearances by Povich, Raphael, Williams, Leeza Gibbons, and John Henson. We will also see Steve Wilkos, the former bodyguard on “The Jerry Springer Show,” who now has his own talk show.
“Dirty Talk: When Daytime Talk Shows Ruled TV” premieres Wednesday, January 14 at 9 p.m. ET on ABC and streams the next day on Disney+ and Hulu.
