Talent competition shows have given performers once-in-a-lifetime opportunities over the years, and one of the most well-known series is “Star Search.” Now, decades after the last winner took their bow, Netflix is rebooting the beloved show. Anthony Anderson will be at the helm this time around, and he told Tudum by Netflix that he is thrilled about the role.
“I’m super excited to host this new chapter of “Star Search” and to introduce such an iconic format to a whole new generation,” Anderson said. Since its original inception in 1983, the competition series has helped some of the most iconic entertainers get their big break. Could the next mega-star be just around the corner? Fans will find out when the show premieres live on January 20, 2026.
Anderson Teased an Exciting New Feature
GettyAlthough some aspects of Netflix’s “Star Search” will feel familiar to fans, Anderson revealed that the series includes an exciting new feature. “The live voting feature is a total game-changer,” he told Tudum. “Knowing that fans from all over the world can cast their votes in real time adds a whole new layer of excitement and participation to the mix.” Viewers will be able to reference a guide to live voting on Tudum before the show begins.
Of course, the talent is the heart of the program, and Anderson revealed that fans have a lot to look forward to this January. “The range of talent we’re going to see is going to blow you away,” he said. Episodes will air on Tuesdays and Wednesdays at 9:00 PM EST for the duration of the series.
CBS Previously Revived ‘Star Search’ in 2004
GettyNetflix’s reboot won’t be the first time “Star Search” got a new lease on life. From 2003 to 2004, CBS aired a brief revival of the show, giving fans and talented performers a chance to relive the magic of the competition. Arsenio Hall took on hosting duties, bringing fresh energy to the series.
GettyOne of the champions of the CBS revival was Jake Simpson, a singer who worked in Manhattan piano bars before his big win. “It was a really emotional night for everybody,” he told CBS about the show’s grand finale. “I was having a really hard time keeping it together…” Naomi Judd, Matt Leshem, and M.C. Lyte served as judges for that iteration of the series.
An ‘American Idol’ Runner-Up Wants a Seat at the Judges’ Table
GettyAs of this writing, the official judges’ panel for the Netflix reboot of “Star Search” hasn’t been released. However, we do know that one of the CBS revival contestants has thrown his hat into the ring: “American Idol” runner-up David Archuleta.
Archuleta competed on the CBS revival when he was just 12 years old. When People asked if he’d be interested in judging the Netflix reboot, he said he’d be up to the task. “Judging is a scary word in my head,” the singer admitted. “But it’d be fun to do.”
