Netflix Announces Sequel Series to a Classic Sitcom

The 80s and 90s are among the most iconic decades in television history. This is especially the case given the number of recent reboots. Now, the former NBC series “A Different World” is set to return with a sequel series on Netflix. The show, which was a spin-off of “The Cosby Show,” ended in 1993.

The original cast of “A Different World” included Jasmine Guy, Kadeem Hardison, Darryl M. Bell, Dawnn Lewis, Lisa Bonet, and Cree Summer. Debbie Allen, Reggie Rock Bythewood, Gina Prince-Bythewood, and Tom Werner served as some of the show’s main producers and directors.


Debbie Allen is Involved With Netflix’s ‘A Different World’ Sequel

According to Variety, Netflix has officially picked up the “A Different World” sequel series after more than a year of development. Regarding its cast, the show will star Maleah Joi Moon as Deborah Wayne, the daughter of Dwayne Wayne and Whitney Gilbert from the original NBC series.

Per its tagline, the show “follows Deborah as she enters her freshman year at her parents’ HBCU alma mater and finds the shadow of her parents difficult to escape. She sets out to build her own legacy – while having the time of her life – alongside a whole new generation of Hillman’s best and brightest.”

Also on the cast are Alijah Kai, Chibuikem Uche, Cornell Young IV, Jordan Aaron Hall, and Kennedi Reece. As for the creative team behind the show, Felicia Pride will serve as writer, executive producer, and showrunner. Allen, Werner, and Prince-Bythewood are also executive producers for the show.

Pride released a statement regarding the “A Different World” series. She said, “It is such an honor to be a part of bringing back this iconic show, one that I grew up on and which had a profound impact on my life.”

The statement continued, “I am so proud of the work we’re doing to reimagine ‘A Different World’ for beloved fans and new generations alike.”


The Show Has Been in the Works For a While

“A Different World” is an iconic series, which means it was important for the team behind the Netflix sequel to get it right. As a result, according to Variety, it has been in development since August 2024. Netflix ordered the pilot for it in March 2025. The cast of the pilot, now a fully greenlit show, was announced in May.

It’s unclear when Netflix will premiere the upcoming “A Different World” sequel series. Notably, the original series is available for streaming on the platform.
