When the all-star cast of “Survivor 50: In the Hands of the Fans” was announced last May, hordes of fans lamented the fact that series legend “Boston” Rob Mariano wouldn’t be returning to compete on the milestone season.
While Mariano claimed, at the time, that he’d turned down the offer to return for a record-breaking sixth competitive season because he wanted the spot “to go to someone who deserved another chance,” it was later revealed that he’d spent four years training his longtime friend and fellow castaway, Jonathan Young, to win Season 50 instead.
Despite making it all the way to the Final Three, however, Young ultimately failed to win over the Season 50 jury, who instead selected “Survivor: Kaoh Rong” runner-up Aubry Bracco as the season’s “Sole Survivor” and recipient of a super-sized $2 million grand prize.
In the aftermath of his defeat, Jonathan claimed that the “bitter” jury had intentionally robbed him of the win, arguing that he’d played a better overall game than Bracco.
Boston Rob, who’d been endorsing Young all season long, ultimately slammed his friend’s post-game comments, claiming that he’d “butchered” his exit press in an interview with TV Insider at the 2026 ATX TV Festival in Austin, Texas on Friday, May 29.
Boston Rob Says Jonathan Played a ‘Good Game,’ But ‘Butchered’ His Exit Press
GettySpeaking with TV Insider about Jonathan’s performance on “Survivor 50,” Mariano said that he “mostly” played a good game, adding that Young’s game only fell apart when it came to jury management.
“He’s not me, he can’t play my game. He has to play his game. He did the best he could,” said Mariano, adding, “I think when it got to the stage where there was a jury and there wasn’t a jury, I remember telling him, ‘You’ve got to count your votes and [being] careful about how you put people on the just is more important than just getting to the end. But at the same time, if you’re so careful and you don’t get to the end, then you lose either way.”
“I think he did a good job overall,” he continued, albeit with the admission that Young “butchered his [exit] press.”
Jonathan Claims a ‘Bitter’ Jury Led to His Season 50 Defeat
In a post-finale interview with Entertainment Weekly, Jonathan Young questioned his second-place finish on “Survivor 50,” telling the publication: “I believe deep in my heart that I played the better game. But because Aubry’s played five times, that weighed on a lot of the jury votes. And is that fair? That’s up to the fans and up to ‘Survivor’ to decide.”
Despite his insistence that he played a better game than Aubry, Young only received three jury votes compared to Bracco’s eight.
“I wanna know where the foul-up was,” Young continued, questioning the jury’s decision to award the “Sole Survivor” title to Aubry instead of him. “That’s $2 million. That’s life-changing money. I was gonna build a ranch for women and children down in Honduras. That was what I was gonna do with the money. But this season, they didn’t even ask you what you were gonna do with the money.”
Rob Says Young Discrediting Aubry’s Win Was ‘A Wrong Move’
While Boston Rob admitted his protege played a good game overall, he wasn’t happy to see Jonathan trying to discredit Aubry’s victory in his exit press.
“It gets hard, because he’s a pretty emotional guy and I think he took it really hard,” Mariano explained. “But I told him that that was a wrong move. I don’t think belittling Aubry’s game to make your game better is a good look, and he agrees. But in the moment, he felt it.”
“You can’t take it away from Aubry,” he continued. “She won. I always have said the person that wins is the one that deserves to win. The jury can vote however they want. It’s your job to manage them. I give Aubry a lot of credit.”
What Does Aubry Think of Jonathan’s Comments About Her Win?
As far as Aubry’s response to Jonathan’s post-game comments goes, the recently crowned “Sole Survivor” told fans on Instagram on Saturday, May 30, that she sympathized with her fellow finalist, having been in his shoes before.
“Jonathan was hurting in that moment. It is devastating to learn that you lost,” Bracco told fans, referencing her devastating Final Tribal Council loss to Michele Fitzgerald on “Survivor: Kaoh Rong.” “We all handle it differently and something that I’ve come to believe over the four times I played ‘Survivor’ is that your opinion of me is none of my business. It has nothing to do with me.”
“I do my best in the game, I play the game I’m gonna play and you’re gonna have feelings on it,” she added, though she admitted it was “a little hard” to see Young discrediting her victory considering the bond they’d formed while filming Season 50.
Regardless, she said she “really genuinely” hopes Jonathan’s “doing okay” now that the dust has settled.
“I disagree with him, but he’s allowed to have his opinion. It is what it is. I don’t like that saying, but I’m confident in the game that I played,” she concluded.
