‘Survivor 50’ Star Argued with Jeff Probst over Medical Evacuation: ‘I’m a Lawyer’

On last week’s three-hour season premiere, “Survivor 50: In the Hands of the Fans” landed two devastating blows to the fandom following the elimination of “Survivor: Borneo” returnee Jenna Lewis-Dougherty and the shocking injury – and eventual medical evacuation – of “Survivor 48” champion Kyle Fraser

In the days following the premiere, Kyle opened up about his reaction to the heartbreaking moment, revealing that he actually argued with longtime “Survivor” host Jeff Probst to let him stay in the game.

Fraser’s return to the series just one year after being crowned the Sole Survivor of Season 48 — He actually started filming just two weeks after his finale aired on CBS — was cut short on Wednesday night after suffering a severe Achilles tendon injury during the inaugural Immunity Challenge.

Regardless, Kyle and the rest of the Vatu Tribe were able to complete the challenge — interrupted by a brief examination from resident “Survivor” medic Dr. Joe Rowles — and secure safety from Tribal Council. The following day, however, longtime host Jeff Probst returned to camp for a more thorough check-up for Fraser’s injury.

The second examination revealed that Kyle’s injury was severe and needed surgical attention. If left untreated, Dr. Joe warned Fraser the injury could lead to serious long-term damage.

Afterwards, Probst pulled Kyle from the game, no questions asked or answered, marking the end of his “Survivor 50” journey.

In a new interview with “Entertainment Weekly,” Kyle revealed that he “would’ve stayed,” despite his injury, if given the chance.

“Yeah, I would’ve stayed,” he said. “Jeff obviously had my best interest at heart. Same with Dr. Joe. It was clear that I needed to go.”

Kyle Wanted to ‘Lawyer Up’ to Stay in the Game

“But I argued with them for quite some time,” he added. “Jeff will tell you. I mean, we argued for a long time. I told him, ‘I’m a lawyer.’ I’d sign a waiver. I want to stay out there because I think my tribe was definitely going to keep me.”

Always the legal eagle, Kyle even cited precedent, reminding Probst that James Clement had refused to be med-evaced during “Survivor: Heroes vs. Villains” despite suffering a painful knee injury.

Sure, James’ injury ultimately led to his tribe mates voting him out for being a physical liability, but at least he got voted out.

“Like, I wanted my torch snuffed if I was going to leave that island,” Fraser explained. “And I said that there was precedent with James.”

Despite admitting that Probst and Dr. Joe were “ultimately right,” Kyle added, “I would’ve stayed and gone on for as long as possible, though. Even when the doctor was doing that test, I was trying to wiggle my toes because he was explaining the test to Jeff and I thought maybe that would get me out of it.”

In spite of his wishes, Kyle ended up spending just one night in Ponderosa with first-eliminated contestant Jenna Lewis before being flown back to the United States for treatment.

How is Kyle Fraser Doing Now?

“I was back to New York within, I think, 32 hours. I went to the doctor immediately, got checked out,” Kyle revealed. “They confirmed that it was a full tear in the Achilles and that I needed surgery. And I believe I had surgery probably four to five days later, because you have to get it done as quickly as possible.”

Kyle has since recovered from his injury and surgery, an achievement he’s been documenting on social media since the “Survivor 50” premiere.

While Fraser’s journey on the milestone season has ended, he aspires to return to the show one day (“Winners at War 2”?). Until then, he’s looking forward to the birth of his first child with his wife Maggie. The baby girl is due to arrive in May 2026.

“Survivor 50: In the Hands of the Fans” will return to CBS screens nationwide on Wednesday, March 11 at 8:00pm ET.
