Phil Keoghan Teases Big Twists for the Future of ‘The Amazing Race’

After an experimental season that brought “Big Brother” alumni onto the global course, “The Amazing Race” host Phil Keoghan is already looking far beyond the finish mat. After the season 38 finale this week, Keoghan hints that the show’s future could include everything from long-awaited All-Star comebacks to fan-selected teams, and maybe even a race to the edge of space. As “The Amazing Race” season 38 closes and the wait for season 39 begins, “The Amazing Race” may be gearing up for some of its boldest moves yet.

Another Reality-Based Season?

While it was fun to watch the “Big Brother” houseguests outside of the house, do we need another season of familiar faces from other reality TV shows on “The Amazing Race”? It looks like Phil doesn’t think so.

When asked about another season full of former reality stars, Keoghan told Parade, “Never say never, I guess. But I think there are so many other new things we have in the works that I think we should try first. At the end of the day, there is something truly wonderful about sharing the world with people who live in ‘Heartland America’ and who have perhaps never left the country — and in some cases, their state.”

It sounds like he wants to keep it to people we may have never heard of before, but the possibility is always there.

‘The Amazing Race’ in Space?

Want to see something on the show? It looks like you can reach out to Phil to make those suggestions.

He told Parade, “I love when fans reach out to make suggestions about what they’d like to see on the show. Not just who we cast but where we go and what they want to see us do.”

While he didn’t mention any of those places fans want them to go, he did mention a very odd place they may end up in: space!

“As small as the world is becoming, certainly much smaller than when we started back in 2001, there is an inordinate number of new places and challenges we want to include in new seasons,” Keoghan said. “I’ve said it before, I do think going to space on the race is absolutely possible in the next few years. Mark my words.”

What We Know About ‘The Amazing Race’ Season 39

While it doesn’t look like any reality alum will be appearing on the next season, which has already been taped, we do have some “The Amazing Race” spoilers.

Padma Lakshmi’s new show, “America’s Culinary Cup,” will be premiering in the spring of 2026, taking the post-Survivor slot. That means “The Amazing Race” season 39 probably won’t hit CBS until fall 2026.

When talking about season 39, Keoghan said, “Captivating cast, some new twists which gave us the desired results of changing things up, great weather in destinations where it really made a difference, some unpredictable challenge moments, and a special episode I took particular interest in ended with a special personal moment in my life.”

Looking Forward to Season 40

While we still have season 39 to get through, fans have been anticipating season 40. Since it’s that nice round number, maybe they could take a page from “Survivor” and bring back previous winners to compete to be the best of the best?

Phil said they are thinking of a variety of options. They have been considering an All-Star season, as well as possibly a celebrity version.

He said, “Perhaps a celebrity who’s a Race fan who races with one of their big fans? Drew Barrymore with someone from her audience? Snoop Dogg and a fan picked out of the audience at one of his concerts, or we see him interviewing potential teammates leading up to the start?”

He even mentioned the possibility of second chances, so teams that may have finished in the top 3, but didn’t quite win. Phil even mentioned the possibility of bringing back teams that were eliminated first, but that could be a very slow race. Or maybe allow fans to vote for their favorite teams, with the winners competing in season 40.

We will have to wait and see how season 39 and season 40 pan out, but for now, Jas & Jag are enjoying their season 38 victory.
