Alan Cumming’s Stylist Breaks Down the Wild Fashion of ‘The Traitors’ Season 4

Alan Cumming’s fashion on “The Traitors” has become one of the most talked-about elements of the hit Peacock competition series, and season 4 continues that tradition in dramatic fashion. Behind the Emmy-winning host’s bold, theatrical wardrobe is stylist Sam Spector, who recently shared insight into how the show’s standout looks come together and what viewers might not realize about the process.

Alan Cumming’s ‘The Traitors’ Fashion Is Built on Collaboration

According to Spector, the styling process is a constant mix of planning and surprise.

“What works and what doesn’t is always surprising to me,” Spector said to E! News. “I think something’s going to be the star of the series, and sometimes it works and sometimes it doesn’t.”

One of the most talked-about looks from season 4 debuted in the premiere episode on January 8: a dramatic coffin-inspired coat worn by Cumming. Spector revealed the viral piece was created using two off-the-rack coats, cardboard, and beads.

“[Beforehand] I was a little bit like, ‘Meh, fine,’” he admitted. “But now I think it’s become a real standout. People are talking about the coffin coat, and now I love it.”

While the looks have grown increasingly theatrical since season one, Spector said the core inspiration has stayed consistent.

“He wanted to be a fashion dandy,” Spector explained. “There were keywords, like ‘a glamorous James Bond villain.’ But Scottish apparel was always an influence. It’s always a mix of glam, Scottish, villainy.”

‘The Traitors’ Outfits Hide Clues and Face Tight Deadlines

Beyond visual drama, Spector said some of Cumming’s outfits subtly reference each episode’s mission. Attentive fans may spot Easter eggs during the breakfast scenes, though Spector made it clear the clothing never hints at who the Traitors are.

“I’ve never done that,” he said. “I don’t know who the Traitors are until I watch with you, so I’m not privy to that information, which is great.”

Spector added that most clues are tied to missions, not eliminations. “Sometimes I’m given info that there should be a clue. I was told once to add a key or something that would be referenced later in a quiz. But mostly the clues are at breakfast.”

One surprising detail is that there are no backup outfits.

“There are no backups,” Spector said. “We only create one outfit an episode.” Each look evolves throughout the episode, starting with a simpler breakfast outfit that is later embellished for missions and roundtable discussions.

That approach can be challenging when production schedules shift. “Sometimes at the last minute, the challenge or the mission or the order will change,” Spector shared. “I’m getting texts or calls while they’re filming.”

Despite the pressure, Spector said working with Cumming makes the process seamless. Speaking to The Hollywood Reporter in 2025, Spector described their partnership as highly collaborative.

“It’s really an amazing collaboration,” he said, noting that producers, the network, and Cumming all contribute creatively.

Spector also praised Cumming’s willingness to take risks. “He’s willing to explore and experiment with different looks,” he said. “Being able to play with gender and put Alan in a skirt on the bottom and a tuxedo on top is amazing for me as an artist.”
