Hulu has premiered several new shows so far in 2026, including the Mindy Kaling-created “Not Suitable for Work,” which arrived on the platform in June. Sadly, the streaming giant has opted not to renew the series for a second season despite fairly solid reviews from fans.
Variety confirmed the news of Hulu canceling “Not Suitable for Work” on August 24. Warner Bros. TV, which had a hand in producing the series, plans to shop it around to other networks. As mentioned, former star of “The Office, ” Kaling created the series and executive produced it alongside its showrunner, Charlie Grandy, and Howard Klein.
The show’s cast included Ella Hunt (Dickinson), Avantika (Mean Girls 2024), Will Angus (Prom Dates), Jack Martin (Pizza Movie), Nicholas Duvernay (The White Lotus), and Jay Ellis (Insecure).
The show also featured several recurring guest stars, including Victor Garber, Greg Germann, Judy Gold, Ego Nwodim, Harry Richardson, Constance Wu, Laura Bell Bundy, May Hong, Bhavesh Patel, Emilia Suárez, and Michael Benjamin Washington.
Fans And Critics Were Divided on Hulu’s ‘Not Suitable for Work’

Per the logline, the series centers around “work-obsessed 20-somethings striving for professional success and, if they have time, personal happiness in Manhattan’s most glamorous neighborhood, Murray Hill.”
Hunt stars in the show as AJ, an investment banker from Boston who moves to New York for a new job. This new arrangement finds her living with her best friend, played by Avantika. They are neighbors with Angus and Martin’s characters.
Regarding reviews, opinions on “Not Suitable for Work” were mixed. It currently holds a 54% positive rating from critics on Rotten Tomatoes. However, it has an impressive 82% rating from audiences. Viewership for the show is unknown, but it reached number one on Hulu’s Top 15 Today chart and remained there until July 9.
Mindy Kaling Opened Up About the Show
GettyKaling created multiple series leading up to Hulu’s “Not Suitable for Work,” including “The Mindy Project” and “Never Have I Ever.” Regarding the newly canceled series, the former “Office” star opened up about it in June 2026, revealing that it’s partly autobiographical.
She said, “Not Suitable for Work is kind of my third show that I’ve done about my youth. Never Have I Ever is about my teenage years. The Sex Lives of College Girls was [about] my college [experience], and then this is about my 20s.”
In speaking about her experiences, she stated, “I am surprised by how vividly I remember the time when I moved from Boston to New York at 21. And what a rude awakening it was.” The actress then recalled, “the feeling of having so much to say and having so much to offer, or thinking I did, and having no access.”
Kaling added, “When your ambition does not meet your access, to me, it was really theatrical, and fun, and also a painful time in my life. I also had so many crushes and a really dynamic friend group, and I just wanted to do a show about that.”
